November 29th, 2021



This week in literacy, we will…

  • Recognize and say consonant clusters that blend 2 or 3 consonant sounds

  • Read a poem titled, Star Light, Star Bright

  • Read The Creaky House: A Tale From Europe, adapted by Betty Riggs. While reading, we will hear and say initial consonant clusters. We will also infer a lesson from the story, identify the importance of the setting and remember important details. 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons

  • Read, Going on a Bear Hunt by Margie Sigman. We will connect words that have similar letter clusters and phonogram patterns (st, spl, gr). We will also make connections to content, characters and events.

  • Read a poem titled Four Seasons. We will identify words that appeal to the senses and recognize words with beginning consonant clusters in the poem

In writing this week, we will…

  • Write holiday letters 

  • Read the book The Day The Crayons Quit to better understand Point of View and opinions 

  • Write our own opinions based off the book The Day The Crayons Quit 


In math this week, we will…

  • Use strategies to add with sums to 20

  • Group and count objects by tens

  • Demonstrate an understanding that numbers from 11 to 19 are composed of a 10 and some more ones

  • Compare pairs of 2-digit numbers

  • Add a 1-digit and a 2-digit number

  • Students will take the Unit 3 assessment


In Social Studies, we will learn about community helpers and workers.  We will also learn about rural, suburban, and urban communities.

Here's the scoop for the upcoming week. This week’s math homework is a game to play with your child and does not need to be returned to school. Enjoy!

This week in literacy, we will... 

  • Recognize and say consonant clusters that blend two or three consonant sounds 

  • Read Old to New, by Jena Croxford, for shared reading. We will notice consonant clusters and inflectional endings of words. We will also discuss the sequence of events in the story

  • Read a poem titled, The Big Black Bug 

  • Write about what we’re thankful for during Community Writing time

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons

This week in writing, we will... 

  • Share our opinions about different topics with others

  • Continue using convincing statements to support our ideas

  • Read I Wanna Iguana, by Karen Kaufman Orloff, and write reasons why the main character, Alex, should or should not get a pet iguana

  • Write opinions pieces about our favorite season

This week in math, we will... 

  • Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into parts in more than one way

  • Record decompositions of numbers less than or equal to 10 with drawings and equations

  • Add fluently with sums to 10 

  • Solve for the unknown in an addition equation involving 3 whole numbers

  • Use strategies to add with sums to 20

  • Group and count objects by twos, fives, and tens

  • Use appropriate tools strategically

  • Look for and make use of structure

This week in Social Studies, we will... 

  • Learn about neighborhoods
  • Create a map of something students' choose - their bedroom, house, or neighborhood
  • Read Be My Neighbor by Maya Ajmera. In this book we will “travel” around the world to learn about different neighborhoods and what it means to be a good neighbor in communities across the globe.

Week of November 8, 2021


As mentioned in Thorson's Thursday Folder, all 3 elementary schools will be celebrating veterans as they drive past in a procession on Thursday, November 11. They're due to drive past Thorson at 9:30 and we'll be outside wearing red, white & blue, cheering, maybe singing, waving flags or signs to show our appreciation for their service. If you have a veteran you would like to participate in the processional, they are welcome. 


This week in literacy, we will…


  • Recognize and use the phonograms -ap, -ay and -ai

  • Recognize that letters can be consonants or vowels

  • Read Tap, Tap. Tappity-Tap, by Elizabeth Sawyer, for shared reading.  We will infer feelings of characters and understand a simple theme. We will also read repeating phrases with fluency and intonation

  • Read a poem titled, The Squirrel 

  • Write about shared experiences for Community Writing

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons


In writing this week, we will…

  • Share our opinions about different topics with others

  • Continue using convincing statements to support our ideas

  • Write book reviews on our favorite stories

  • Create summaries for our different reviews 


In math this week, we will…

  •  Apply the commutative property of addition to add

  •  Use strategies to add with sums to 20

  •  Determine whether a group of objects (up to 20) has an odd or even number of members

  • Identify whether a number is odd or even

  • Practice our doubles facts

  • Solve addition and subtraction story problems with sums to 20 involving situations of adding to, putting together, taking away, and comparing, with unknowns in all positions

  • Decompose numbers less than or equal to 10 into parts in more than one way

  • Record decompositions of numbers less than or equal to 10 with drawings and equations


In Science this week, we will continue to learn about fast and slow land changes.  We will also learn more about Veterans.  Additionally, we will begin a new Social Studies unit on Neighborhoods.

Halloween Fun!

We had so much at our Halloween party and parade!


 


STEM Pumpkin Activity

Last week, we had fun building a haunted house with toothpicks and pumpkins.  Our goal was to fit the paper ghost inside.  The students enjoyed this project and persevered when it was difficult!  They did a great job working together!

Week of November 1, 2021

  • Identify syllables in one- or two- syllable words

  • Read The Singing Wolf: An Aesop Fable. We will hear and identify short vowel sounds and letters that represent them. We will also read dialogue in a way that reflects the emotions of characters and infer a “lesson” from the story.

  • Read a poem titled, The Dingle Dangle Scarecrow 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons


In writing this week, we will…

  • Share our opinions about different topics with others

  • Use convincing statements to support our ideas

  • Write to persuade others 

  • Review and edit our work 

  • Make comparisons in our writing to make our piece more convincing and interesting


In math this week, we will…

  •  Start Unit 3 of Math

  • Apply the commutative property of addition to add

  • Add fluently with sums to 20

  • Solve for the unknown in an addition equation involving 3 whole numbers

  • Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to 3 categories

  • Solve addition and subtraction problems by counting on or counting back

  • Identify whether a number is odd or even

  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively


In Science this week, we will…

  • Compare and contrast animals that live on land and animals that live in water.

  • Learn about fast and slow land changes and the difference between them.


We will also learn more about Veterans’ Day, write a thank you card to Veterans, and complete a directed drawing to give to Veterans.
