December 20th Newsletter


 

We are excited for a fun three days of learning and activities! I hope you have a fun and relaxing winter break with your family!

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Read Food Store in the Winter by Reese Brooks. We will talk about what is interesting in an illustration and discuss information in text. We will also notice words that represent sounds and read repeating phrases with intonation as dictated by punctuation

  • Read a funny poem titled, Snowball, by Shel Silverstein

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons

  • Read winter themed books, including Snowmen All Year by Caralyn Buehner and There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed Some Snow by Lucille Colandro


In writing this week, we will…

  • Write a How-To book about the ways we could catch a Gingerbread man


In math this week, we will…

  • Play some Holiday themed addition and subtraction games.

  • Find how many tens and ones are in a given number

  • Write numbers in expanded form

December 13, 2021


This week in literacy, we will…

  • Recognize and use phonograms with a vowel- consonant-e pattern, such as -ate, -ake, -ame

  • Read a poem titled, What’s Your Name?

  • Read The Gingerbread Girl: A European Folktale, adapted by Henry Jack Paris. While reading, we will reflect punctuation with our voices. We will also infer the characters' feelings as well as infer a lesson or central message from the story

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons

  • Compare and contrast a variety of versions of the Gingerbread Man

In writing this week, we will…

  • Edit a variety of sentences using our knowledge of capitalization and punctuation

  • Get creative by writing about our favorite holiday topics. During writing, we will focus on using our Word Wall, Sound Wall, and familiar spelling patterns to help spell words

  • Practice handwriting skills 


In math this week, we will…

  • Learn different methods on how to solve different word problems

  • Learn what parts of a word problem are important

  • Work on Math workplaces


In Science this week we will continue our unit on Pushes & Pulls.  We will go on a scavenger hunt around our classroom and find items we push and pull.  We will also do four different experiments that have to do with forces, speed, and examining which items are easier to push and pull and why.

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Recognize and use long vowel sounds in words with silent e

  • Read a poem titled, Five Little Mice

  • Read Animal Surprises by Nicole Walker. While reading, we will use features of print to use visual information and understand that photographs support content. We will also read words with vowel-consonant e spelling patterns and use word parts to read multisyllabic words.


In writing this week, we will…

  • Write a “How-To” informational piece about wrapping a present. While writing, we will focus on adding details and stating specific steps 

  • Write acrostic poems about winter topics 


In math this week, we will…

  • Solve addition and subtraction story problems with sums and minuends to 20

  • Use <,>, and = symbols to record comparisons of numbers

  • Solve for the unknown in story problems

  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively

  • Model with mathematics

  • Find addition facts for numbers 6-10


In Social Studies, we will finish our neighborhood unit by reading The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown and writing about why Cedarburg is important to us.  We will also begin a new Science unit on Pushes & Pulls.  We will be learning more about forces and thinking about items we push and pull everyday.
