April 29th Newsletter

 

April 29th, 2024

If you haven’t sent a baby picture to your child’s teacher, please send one ASAP so your child can participate in Baby Picture Day on May 1st.  Thank you!

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish and know the sound-spellings for long i and long o (ie and oe)

  • Read irregularly spelled words (number, today, special, over).

  • Build fluency while reading a book titled, Moe's Diner. While reading we will infer the characters' feelings and retell important information from the story.

  • Identify the elements of a sentence. We will review the use of quotation marks, commas, and capitalization of proper nouns. 

  • Read a poem titled, It's Raining. We will review inflectional endings (-ed and -ing) and contractions while reading this poem. 

  • Read a book titled, The Strawberry Hunt, by Joan Silver. We will talk about illustrations and print features to evaluate how they help understand information. We ill also discuss the story's setting, and why it's important. 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons. 

This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue our From Scenes to Series writing unit

  • Include sparkly words in our fiction stories

  • Use spelling strategies to spell tricky words (say the sounds slowly, use snap words, listen for little words inside the big word, use words we know to help us)

  • Use a checklist in order for us to set writing goals


This week in math, we will….

  • We will finish Unit 7 and start our last unit of the year! 

  • Discuss time, specifically seconds, minutes, and an hour

  • Sort tasks based on how much time they will take to complete

This week in social studies we will….

  • Finish our unit on People and Money

  • Complete an inquiry project by creating a marketplace in our classroom. Students will buy, trade and sell good and services to one another. We are so excited for this fun hands on learning activity!

April 22nd Newsletter

 

April 22nd, 2024

For an upcoming writing unit, students will be creating a box set for a series they will be writing.  If you haven’t already, please send in a cereal box wrapped with blank white construction or printer paper for your student to color on! Please leave the top of the cereal box open so that your child can put their writing inside of it. Thank you so much for your help with this!

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish long i and long o vowel sounds- i(ld), i(nd) and o(ld).

  • Read irregularly spelled words (even, never, most, another).

  • Build fluency by reading a book titled, Kind Child, Wild Child. While reading, we will compare and contrast. We will also share our opinions about the text and provide reasons from the book to support our ideas.

  • Read a poem titled, Five Little Sparrows. We will review vowel teams (ee, ay, ea, ow) and learn about ordinal numbers when reading this poem.

  • Review contractions.

  • Read a book titled, Antonio and the Firefly, by June Schwartz. When reading, we will make predictions, understand main ideas in the story and infer the characters' feelings using clues from pictures and the text.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons. 


This week in writing, we will…

  • Begin a new writing unit on From Scenes to Series, which is a fiction unit

  • Learn how to do some serious pretending in our writing

  • Include characters and a setting in our fiction stories

  • Think of a problem or trouble our main character gets into


This week in math, we will….

  • We will take our Unit 7 Test

  • Determine the value of a collection of coins

  • Demonstrate an understanding that the digits in a 2 digit number represent tens and ones

  • Add a 1-digit number and a 2-digit number and a multiple of 10 of another 2-digit number

  • Learn to count coins in a new game “Two Turns to Win”

  • Learn about trading in coins - EX: two nickels equals one dime

This week in social studies we will….

  • Continue our unit on People and Money

  • Learn about work in the past and create a graphic organizer with the information we learn

  • Learn about jobs that were important long ago and are still important today

  • Read irregularly spelled words (once, upon, yellow, live).

  • Read a story titled, The Three Bears: A Retelling. While reading, we will infer the characters' feelings and find details in the text or illustrations to support our inferences. We will also make connections to text. 

  • Read a poem titled Hickory, Dickory, Dare.

  • Read multisyllabic words. 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Finish our non-fiction books.

  • Share our non-fiction books with our classmates.


This week in math, we will….

  • Continue to learn about objects that represent numbers

  •  Solve addition story problems with sums to 20 involving situations of adding to and putting together, with unknowns in all positions

  • Solve story problems involving addition of 3 whole numbers whose sums is less than or equal to 20

  • Apply the commutative and associative properties of addition to add

  • Use strategies to add with sums to 20

  • Demonstrate an understanding that the length measurement of an object is the number of same-size length units that span it with no gaps or overlaps

This week in social studies we will….

  • Continue our unit on People and Money

  • Learn about the jobs people do

  • Learn about how work has changed over the years

  • Learn about volunteers and how they make the world a better place

April 8th, 2024


This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish and know the sound-spellings for the complex vowel /o/ sound (au, aw, alk, alt and all).

  • Read irregularly spelled words (been, before, pretty, warm).

  • Build fluency while reading a book titled, A Walk in the Park. While reading, we will make predictions and retell important information from the text. 

  • Read and write words with inflectional endings (-s, -ing, and -ed).

  • Read a poem titled, A Caterpillar Crawled. We will read words with /aw/ sounds, identify rhyming words and review the purpose of quotation marks.

  • Read a book titled, Scrunch the Caterpillar, by Stephen Krensky. While reading, we will notice words with inflectional endings. We will also identify how and when characters change and learn a lesson in the story. 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • We will continue working on our non-fiction books.

  • Do our own research on our topics using non-fiction books as well as an online resource called PebbleGo.

  • Add a glossary to our non-fiction books!


This week in math, we will….

  • We will be reading the story of Hansel and Gretel

  • We will be using different objects to represent numbers

  • Practice counting by 1s, 5s, and 10s. 

  • Play Race to Zero

  • Use concrete models and drawings to subtract a 2-digit multiple of 10 from an equal or greater 2-digit multiple of 10

  • Relate strategies for subtracting a 2-digit multiple of 10 from an equal or greater 2-digit multiple of 10 to written methods

  • Use written numbers and symbols to represent strategies for subtracting a 2-digit multiple of 10 from an equal or greater 2-digit multiple of 10

  • Explain the reasoning behind a strategy used to subtract a 2-digit multiple of 10 from an equal or greater 2-digit multiple of 10
