October 25th Newsletter

                                                     

Week of October 25, 2021


Our school-wide Halloween celebration will be on Friday, October 29th. Students will have the opportunity to wear their costumes, but please be mindful of the following:


  • Your child must be able to put on his/her costume independently in the classroom

  • Costumes must fit over your child’s clothing


As mentioned in Thorson's Thursday Folder, all 3 elementary schools will be celebrating veterans as they drive past in a procession on Thursday, November 11. They're due to drive past Thorson at 9:30 and we'll be outside wearing red, white & blue, cheering, maybe singing, waving flags or signs to show our appreciation for their service. If you have a veteran you would like to participate in the processional, they are welcome. 


This week in literacy, we will…


  • Hear and identify long vowel sounds

  • Recognize and use consonant clusters at the end of words

  • Read Little Bear and the Three Campers. We will read words with the initial digraphs th- and ch-, self-monitor using recognition of high-frequency words, and use features of print to track words when reading with others.

  • Read a poem titled, Pumpkin Orange 

  • Read books about Halloween, including Creepy Carrots and Creepy Pair of Underwear by Aaron Reynolds

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons


In writing this week, we will…

  • Share our opinions about different topics with others

  • Use convincing statements to support our ideas

  • Write to persuade others 

  • Review and edit our work 

  • Make comparisons in our writing to make our piece more convincing and interesting


In math this week, we will…

  • Take our Unit 2 assessment

  • Learn and practice our doubles facts 

  • Count by 5s

  • Look for patterns and make use of structure


In Science this week, we will…

  • Learn about rocks and minerals

  • Learn how people use Earth’s water

  • Know the importance of water

This week in literacy, we will…


  • Understand that some letters represent vowel sounds

  • Recognize and use consonant clusters at the beginning of words

  • Read In a Dark, Dark Wood by Joy Cowley. We will adjust our voice to reflect aspects of the text (suspense, humor) and notice a repeating pattern of text on each page

  • Read a poem titled, Bat, Bat 

  • Read books about bats and Halloween, including Stellaluna by Jannel Cannon, There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Bat by Lucille Colondro, Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, and Where’s my Mummy by Carolyn Crimi

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons


In writing this week, we will…

  • Continue our unit on opinion writing and writing reviews

  • Share our opinions about different topics with others

  • Use convincing statements to support our details

  • Understand the components of writing an opinion piece and analyze whether or not our opinion pieces have them





In math this week, we will…

  • - Solve addition problems by counting on

  • - Add within 12 and use strategies to add

  • - Use >, <, = symbols to record and compare 1 and 2 digit numbers

  • - Apply commutative property

  • - Solve subtraction problem by finding an unknown addend

  • - Add and subtract within 10

  • - Demonstrate the understanding of the equal sign to determine if addition or subtraction problems are true

  • Recognize doubles facts such as 3+3=6 

  • Learn a new work place called “Spin and Add”


In Science this week, we will…

  • Learn about soil and how we use Earth’s land

  • Learn about different types of landforms including mountains, plateaus, plains, and islands

October 11th Newsletter

 

Week of October 11th, 2021


Our class is growing so much already in first grade! Take home books will be sent home starting this week! Please read the information that comes in the bag with the book! Thank you for reading daily with your child! 


This week in literacy, we will…


  • Understand that some letters represent vowel sounds

  • Hear and identify short vowel sounds in words

  • Read Jumping into the Leaves by Winnie Tucker. We will use and recognize long vowel sounds in words and notice periods, commas, question marks and exclamation marks. We will also talk about how the character changed or learned a lesson in the story. 

  • Read a poem titled, Autumn Leaves 

  • Read books about fall including, 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonological Awareness Lessons

  • Learn proper letter formation for the Magic C letter s. We will also add “s” to the end of words to make them plural


In writing this week, we will…

  • Start our unit on opinion writing and writing reviews

  • Share our opinions about different topics with others

  • Explain our reasoning/evidence behind our opinions 

  • Understand the components of writing an opinion piece 



In math this week, we will…

  • - Recognize the number of objects in a collection of 6 or fewer

  • - Solve addition problems by counting on

  • - Use >, <, and = symbols to compare

  • - Reason abstractly and quantitatively

  • - Count up to 20 objects to answer "how many?" questions.

  • - Add within 20


In Science this week, we will…

  • Continue to learn about animals we see in the fall.

  • Use the online resource PebbleGo to learn even more about the fall animals.

  • Begin a new science unit about land and water!  We will begin learning about different types of landforms.

October 4th Newsletter

 

Week of October 4th, 2021

I am looking forward to a great week ahead! Thanks for your continued support at home! A reminder that library books are due back every Monday. 


Important Information- This week Thursday, October 7th we will be celebrating your students' hard work in writing with a Hollywood themed party! We will have a snack, read our stories, walk the red carpet, and celebrate our hard work and dedication! Your student is invited to dress up to impress for this day! 



This week in literacy, we will…


  • Understand that some letters represent vowel sounds

  • Hear and identify short vowel sounds in words

  • Read The Elephant by Cordelia S. Finn. We will recognize and reflect bold print with our voices, understand the meaning of new words with context and picture support and discuss how photographs provide information in nonfiction books

  • Read a poem titled, The Vowel Song 

  • Read, I am Invited to a Party, by Mo Willems, One Tiny Turtle, by Nicola Davies and The Relatives Came, by Cynthia Rylant

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonological Awareness Lessons

  • Learn proper letter formation for the Magic C letters c and o


In writing this week, we will…

  • Edit/revise our Small Moment stories by checking for end marks, capital letters, and detail

  • Celebrate the completion of our Personal Narratives Unit by sharing our Small Moment stories with the class  



In math this week, we will…


  • Addition with counting on

  • Count objects by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s

  • Add within 20

  • Represent a number of objects with a written numeral up to 120

  • Take Unit 1 Assessment 

  • Start Unit 2 learning about dominos

  • Use Dominos to play a new work place called “Domino Top Draw”

  • Compare numbers using greater than, less than, and equal to signs


In Social Studies this week, we will…
