May 8th Newsletter

 

May 8th-12th, 2023


This week in literacy, we will…

  • Identify syllables in one- or two-syllable words. 

  • Look at syllables in words to read it. 

  • Read a poem titled, Little Raindrops.

  • Read The Singing Wolf: An Aesop Fable by Marta Magellan. While reading, we will recognize contractions and read in a way that reflects that dialogue and emotion of the characters. After reading, we will tell the events of the story in sequential order and infer a "lesson" from the story.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Start a new unit on poetry

  • Learn about what poetry is and why it’s important

  • Write poems using our senses

  • Write shape poems

This week in math, we will….

  • Start Unit 8 on Changes

  • Continue learning about time and elapsed time

  • Discuss how long a second, minute, and hour are

  • Discuss how many seconds are in a minute, how many minutes are in an hour, etc.

  • Discuss our daily routines and at what time we do certain activities like brushing our teeth, sleeping, eating, etc.

  • Learn and play an hour or bust! 

This week in science we will….

  • Continue our nutrition unit

  • Learn about healthy snacks

  • Learn what vitamins and minerals are and why they are important

  • Learn about sugars in our food

  • May 8 - Crazy Sock Day

  • May 12 - Glow Day - Wear White!

  • May 12 - Early Release Day - Students will be dismissed at 1:45pm

  • May 15 - Hat Day

  • May 16 - Interesting Fact Day - Bring an interesting fact to school to share with your classmates!

  • May 16 - Field Trip to Riveredge - Dress for the weather!

May 1-5, 2023


This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish long e and short e vowel sounds.

  • Know vowel team sound-spellings for long e (y, ey and ie).

  • Read irregularly spelled words (also, myself, off and seven).

  • Read The Creaky House by Betty Riggs during shared reading. While reading, we will notice words that represent sound (creaked, ticked, honked), hear initial consonant blends, and notice word endings (-ed and -ing). After reading, we will discuss the setting and why it is important, and infer a "lesson" from the story.

  • Read a poem titled, Four Seasons. We will use this poem to learn about adjectives and words with the long e sound-spelling (y).

  • Sort words by categories and attributes.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Start a new unit on poetry

  • Learn about what poetry is and why it’s important

  • Write poems using our senses

This week in math, we will….

  • Take the Unit 7 test

  • Determine the value of a collection of coins

  • Count quarters, dimes, nickels, and pennies

  • Learn about money in the game “Two turns to win”

  • Read a graph involving money

  • Learn about trading money ex: I can use a dime or two nickles

This week in social studies, we will…

  • Explore different holidays and why they are important.

  • Explain why we celebrate different holidays in our country.

  • Engage in conversations about important people and events. 

  • Write an invitation to a holiday celebration, explaining why and how the holiday is celebrated.

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish long i and long o sounds.

  • Know sound-spellings for long i and long o (ie and oe).

  • Read irregularly spelled words (number, today, special, over).

  • Review the use of quotation marks, commas, and capitalization of proper nouns.

  • Read The Strawberry Hunt, by Joan Silver. While reading, we will discuss personal connections to the characters and events. We will also talk about the story's setting and why it's important.

  • Write a response to reading.

  • Read a poem titled, Sing a Rainbow, and locate color words in the poem. 

  • Use multiple strategies to figure out word meanings.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Finish writing our realistic fiction series

  • Using time words in our writing so that our readers understand what happened first, next and last

  • Revise and edit our stories, using a checklist

  • Create an “About the Author” page

  • Make a special box for our realistic fiction book series

This week in math, we will….

  • Solve addition problems to sums within 20 

  • Apply the commutative and associative properties of addition

  • Use models of benches, flower pots, and fences to add and understand representations

  • Mentally find ten more and ten less than a given number

This week in social studies, we will…

  • Explore what monuments are and why they are important.

  • Describe what monuments help us to remember.

  • Explain which monument would be the best to visit.

  • Draw and write about a monument.


Important Dates to Remember!

  • April 24 - Look for the ABC Countdown sheet to come home in your child’s red folder!  There are a lot of important dates on it!

  • May 1 - Email a baby picture of your child to your child’s teacher on or before May 1st
