September 7-10
This week we will continue sharing summer memories. If your child didn't share their picture last week, they will this week! Here's the scoop for this upcoming week:
This week in literacy, we will…
- Recognize and name letters in words
- Hear and say rhyming words
- Read a poem titled, Dig a Little Hole, and identify rhyming words we hear in the poem
- Read stories about friendship including, My Friend is Sad and Can I Play Too, by Mo Willems
- Read Mrs. McNosh Hangs Up Her Wash and listen for rhyming words. We will discuss how the story keeps changing and share our opinions about Mrs. McNosh
- Write a list about things we like to do with our friends during Community Writing time
- Learn about new literacy centers, including "Browsing Boxes", "Independent Reading" and "Poetry"
- Read Chicken Licken for shared reading and notice rhyming words, identify words with the same beginning sounds and notice ending punctuation. We will also discuss the lesson or message Chicken Licken and his friends learned in the story
- Isolate and produce initial and final sounds
In math this week, we will…
- Count by 2's, 5's, and 10's
- Recognize, count, subitize, and use popsicle sticks as tally marks
- Recognize, describe, extend, and create number patterns
- Organize, represent, and interpret data
- Create our own number racks and play, "Show me the Number"
- Add, subitize, and apply the commutative property with our number racks
- Explore math manipulatives, including unifix cubes, pattern blocks, dominoes, polydrons and geoboards
In writing this week, we will…
- Begin our Personal Narrative Unit
- Write about small moments that happened in our lives
- Organize our thoughts by planning and writing our story across the pages in writing booklets
- Add details to our work by including drawings, labels, and speech bubbles
- Stretch the sounds in words so we can try to spell them
In Social Studies this week, we will…
- Begin our School Unit
- Listen to books about learning and working together, including Elizabeti's School, A Fine, Fine School and David's Drawing
- Learn about listening rules, focusing our attention and following directions
- Learn about being assertive
