October 3-6

 

 This week in literacy, we will...

  • Distinguish the short /e/ vowel sound.
  • Blend sounds to produce words.
  • Read irregularly spelled words.
  • Know the sound-spelling for short /e/.
  • Read and form plural nouns.
  • Read The Elephant by Cordelia S. Finn. We will recognize and understand labels in photographs. We will also locate high-frequency words in text (big, has, the) and locate words with in the body of the text by predicting the first letter and its sound.
  • Read a poem titled, The Elephant Who Jumped the Fence. We will discuss what the poem is about and highlight short /e/ words.
  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.
This week in writing, we will...

  • Continue working on our small moment stories

  • Look at mentor texts to see how real authors make their stories special

  • Add exact actions that our characters do to make our writing come to life

  • Include pop out words in our writing

This week in math, we will...

  • Learn a game with dominoes in which we will add and compare totals using <, >, =

  • Create an addition strategies chart

  • Learn a number puzzle called “Magic Square”

  • Learn two new Workplaces working with dominoes to add and compare totals

  • Begin the 10th month, October, in Number Corner. Students will compose and decompose the number 10, practice on ten-frames and learn about leaps of 10 on the number line. We will collect and count pattern block shapes and organize data.

This week in social studies, we will...

  • Identify and discuss different groups and what makes them special and unique.
  • Learn about families and communities.

  • What did you measure with this week? (Cubes)
  • Who's birthday was it on Friday? (Molly)

Reminders and Upcoming Events:

  • Oct. 5- Library Day Tuesday - please return your books!
  • Oct. 7- No School (Professional Development Day)
  • **Math homework is due on Monday (Oct. 10) due to the short week of school
    • Math homework will be sent home Mondays, and usually will be due on Fridays (unless there is a short week of school)
    • Word lists can be returned once your child confidently reads and writes the words. Take as much time as you need with each list. 
    • Books sent home in book bags should be comfortable for your child, not too hard or too easy. Take as long as you need with the books. A new book will be sent home when the book bag is returned. 
  • Oct. 28- Early Release Day (1:45 pm)
  • Nov. 2- Picture Retake Day
  • Nov. 3- End of First Quarter
  • Nov. 4- No School (Records Day)

  This week in literacy, we will...

  • Distinguish the short /u/ vowel sound.
  • Blend sounds to produce words.
  • Know the sound-spelling for short /u/
  • Read irregularly spelled words (the, to, want, of, do).
  • Read a book titled, Animal Surprises, by Nicole Walker. While reading we will use repeating patterns to anticipate text. We will also use context to understand new words.
  • Write about what we learned from the book, Animal Surprises.
  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will...

  • Continue working on our small moment stories

  • Bring our stories to life by thinking about how our characters look and feel and add it into our writing

  • Work on our spelling by thinking about familiar words to spell new words

This week in math, we will...

  • Warm up with skip counting by 5’s and 10’s forward and backward

  • Learn a new workplace–”Measuring with Unifix Cubes”

  • Measure various lengths of objects and distances using nonstandard units (popsicle sticks, unifix cubes, heel-to-toe steps)

  • Use the number rack to solve missing addend and subtraction problems

  • Continue working on Unit 1 Workplaces

  • Finish up the calendar collections for September in Number Corner

This week in social studies, we will...

  • Learn about how we can be good helpers at school.
  • Learn about being respectful and responsible. 
  • Practice cooperation by working together.
  • Create a skit to demonstrate leading by example. 
  • Describe what being a leader at school looks like and draw a picture to go along with it.

  • What read aloud book series did we read? (Bruce Books - Mother Bruce, Hotel Bruce and Bruce’s Big Move)

This week in literacy, we will...

  • Distinguish the short /o/ vowel sound
  • Know the sound-spelling for short /o/ 
  • Spell irregularly spelled words (the, to, want, do)
  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons
  • Read and write words ending with double final consonants (ll, ss, and zz)
  • Read The Frog Who Couldn't Jump, by Lionel Page. While reading, we will adjust our voices to reflect the characters' emotions and use context to understand the meanings of new words. We will also summarize the problem and solution and infer the main character's personality traits
  • Write about our reading of The Frog Who Couldn't Jump, by writing sentences that describe the main character of the story, Homer
  • Read a poem titled, "My Big Balloon". We will identify words that have short /o/ sounds and highlight high frequency words we've learned
  • Practice routines and procedures for Literacy Centers

This week in writing, we will...

  • Continue working on personal narratives

  • Zoom in and focusing on one small moment to write about

  • Tell our stories in itty bitty steps

This week in math, we will...

  • Organize, represent, and interpret data
  • Learn a new workplace– "Which Coin Will Win?"
  • Solve for an unknown number;  solve by counting on or counting back; solve subtraction problems
  • Work on Unit 1 Workplaces
  • Use the number rack to solve problems
  • Measure with popsicle sticks

This week in social studies, we will...

  • Learn that school rules keep things fair and help us stay safe
  • Analyze video clips and images to discover how rules help us get along and be safe

  • What "specials class" did we have for the first time this week? (Library)

Reminders and Upcoming Events:

  • **We have library on Tuesdays. Please return library books every Tuesday!
  • September 19- Our first math homework will be sent home. Math homework is sent home on Mondays and is due on Fridays.
  • **Continue the great work with reading the words on the word lists. When reading the words, children should be fluent (not have to sound the words out). Take your time with the lists and send them back to school when your child feels confident reading all the words.

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

  • Decode one-syllable words with the short /i/ sound.

  • Read a poem titled, “Big Black Bug”. We will highlight words containing short /i/ vowel sounds.

  • Read Chicken Licken, retold by Owen Peterson. We will notice repeating patterns in the story and understand meanings of words by connecting with pictures and context. We will use story elements to make predictions.

  • Infer the message from the story Chicken Licken and write about it together.

  • Read words with inflectional endings (-s).

  • Read and write high frequency words.

  • Continue to learn and practice routines and procedures for literacy centers.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Begin our first writing unit on personal narratives

  • Work on planning our writing by touching and telling, then sketching our ideas, then writing our stories



This week in math, we will….

  • Group objects by 5’s and 10’s.

  • Utilize the number rack and ten-frame.

  • Apply the commutative property while adding.

  • Solve popsicle stick word problems.

  • Work on Unit 1 Workplaces.

  • Demonstrate understanding of using the number rack.


This week in social studies, we will…

  • Read books about learning and working together

  • We will begin to learn about citizenship and the difference between rules and laws

  • Read a poem titled, “Dig a Little Hole”. We will highlight rhyming words and identify words containing short /a/ vowel sounds.

  • Read Peanut Butter and Cupcake by Terry Border. We will discuss the theme of the story, friendship, and participate in a getting to know you activity.

  • Hear and say rhyming words.

  • Read Mrs. McNosh Hangs Up Her Wash by Sarah Weeks. We will listen for rhyming words, make predictions, and enjoy a silly story!

  • Read, build and write high frequency words.

  • Learn and practice routines and procedures for literacy centers.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue oral storytelling by sharing our bag items with our classmates

  • Create a heart map listing all of the things we love

  • Share the heart map we create with our classmates



This week in math, we will….

  • Count forward and backward by 1’s and 2’s and 5’s; count to 120;  solve problems using the twin pops.

  • Introduce 2 new Workplaces:  polydrons and geoboards & bands.

  • Begin collection of tallies, sticks and tiles; introduce the number line pocket chart; update the calendar collector / days in school chart
