This week in literacy, we will…
Distinguish r-controlled vowel sound /ur/.
Spell words with the r-controlled vowel sound /ur/ spelling pattern.
Read irregularly spelled words (your, because, always, want).
Identify elements of a sentence and review quotation marks and capital letters for proper nouns.
Decode one-syllable words with /ur/, spelled er, ir, and ur.
Read a poem titled, Little Bird. While reading, we will highlight words with "ir". We will also review vowel teams by locating words with ay, ai, ew vowel teams in the poem. Additionally, we will discuss the meaning of quotation marks.
Read a nonfiction book about giraffes. While reading, we will infer the author's message and make connections between the body of the text and illustrations.
Write a response to reading, focusing on big ideas and supporting details.
Learn about words with multiple meanings.
Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons.

Finish our How-To writing presentations
Begin a new unit on Non-Fiction Chapter Books
Write about things (sports, games, shows, animals) we know a lot about that we can teach others
Make sure we plan our our writing (touch and tell, then sketch, then write across the pages)

Identify, name, describe, compare two-dimensional shapes including triangles, rectangles, hexagons, squares, rhombuses, circles, and trapezoids
Draw a two-dimensional shape with specific defining attributes

Learn about polar bears, seals, and walruses in winter.
