This week in literacy, we will…
Know sound-spelling of words with the r-controlled vowel sound /ur/.
Read irregularly spelled words (your, because, always, want).
Identify the elements of a sentence.
Review the use of quotation marks and capital letters for proper nouns.
Read The Giraffe, by Cordelia S. Finn. We will infer the author's purpose for writing this nonfiction book, and make connections among texts by noting similarities.
Read a poem titled, Little Bird. When reading the poem, we will identify words with r-controlled vowel sounds. We will also identify the function of quotation marks, and brainstorm synonyms for the word "cried".
Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.
This week in writing, we will…
Begin a new unit on Informative Writing
Learn and understand the features of the nonfiction genre
Make a list of topics we know a lot about (animals, weather, seasons, habitats, important places/people, machines or things that we use every day)
Begin planning and drafting a nonfiction informational book
This week in math, we will….
Start Unit 6 of math
Using penguins we will solve different types of word problems involving subtraction and addition
Determine what information is important in word problems
This week in social studies we will….
Begin a new unit on Past and Present
Explore what we can learn from life long ago

February 29- Cooking Up Some Good Books- We will have a class treat provided to our class - please do not send in a treat with your child
March 1- Readers Are Leaders- Dress as what you want to be when you grow up
