This week in literacy, we will…

• Decode single-syllable words with r-controlled vowel sound /or/.

• Spell words with r-controlled vowel sound /or/ spelling patterns. 

• Read irregularly spelled words (open, walk, buy, every).

• Identify the elements of a sentence and review the use of end punctuation.

• Read and write words with prefixes (dis- and pre-).

• Read a poem titled, Horsie, Horsie. We will locate words with /or/ and identify sound words in the poem.

• Understand that a main topic is what a text is mostly about. 

• Recognize that key details are pieces of information that tell about the main topic. 

• Write a response to reading.

• Learn that synonyms are words that mean the same, or almost the same thing.

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons. 

This week in writing, we will…

• Continue writing Non-Fiction Chapter Books

• Work on being brave spellers and use the strategy “Say it, slide it, hear it, write it”, listening for chunks we know and using our word wall

• Use an editing checklist to make sure we have spaces between words, checked the word wall, tried our best to spell tricky words, used ending punctuation and capital letters

This week in math, we will….

•  Identify, name, describe, compare two-dimensional shapes including triangles, rectangles, hexagons, squares, rhombuses, circles, and trapezoids

• Draw a two-dimensional shape with specific defining attributes

• Sort and graph two- dimensional shapes based off their attributes

• Makes sense of problems and persevere in solving them

•  Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between the defining and non-defining attributes of a two-dimensional shape

• Play shape riddles and guess your teachers shape based on clues that include non-defining attributes and defining attributes

This week in science, we will…

• Learn about arctic foxes, penguins, and snowy owls in winter.

This week in literacy, we will…

• Distinguish r-controlled vowel sound /ur/.

• Spell words with the r-controlled vowel sound /ur/ spelling pattern.

• Read irregularly spelled words (your, because, always, want).

• Identify elements of a sentence and review quotation marks and capital letters for proper nouns.

• Decode one-syllable words with /ur/, spelled er, ir, and ur.

• Read a poem titled, Little Bird. While reading, we will highlight words with "ir". We will also review vowel teams by locating words with ay, ai, ew vowel teams in the poem. Additionally, we will discuss the meaning of quotation marks. 

• Read a nonfiction book about giraffes. While reading, we will infer the author's message and make connections between the body of the text and illustrations. 

• Write a response to reading, focusing on big ideas and supporting details.

• Learn about words with multiple meanings.

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

• Finish our How-To writing presentations

• Begin a new unit on Non-Fiction Chapter Books

• Write about things (sports, games, shows, animals) we know a lot about that we can teach others

• Make sure we plan our our writing (touch and tell, then sketch, then write across the pages)

This week in math, we will….

•  Take the Unit 5 Test

• Identify, name, describe, compare two-dimensional shapes including triangles, rectangles, hexagons, squares, rhombuses, circles, and trapezoids

• Draw a two-dimensional shape with specific defining attributes

• Makes sense of problems and persevere in solving them

This week in science, we will…

• Learn about polar bears, seals, and walruses in winter.

This week in literacy, we will…

• Distinguish r-controlled vowel sound /ar/.

• Read words with r-controlled vowel sounds /ar/ spelling patterns.

• Read irregularly spelled words (work, again, eight, two).

• Review capitalization of proper nouns.

• Read a poem titled Hearts.

• Read Valentine's read alouds

• Read Garden Helpers, by Charlotte Rose, during shared reading. We will discuss important information in a nonfiction text and talk about the big idea and supporting details. Additionally, we will read words with consonant clusters and recognize compound words.

• Write a response to reading.

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons

This week in writing, we will…

• We will be sharing our how-to at home presentations with the class this week!  If you are doing a presentation or video, please email it as soon as possible if you haven’t done so already!  Thank you so much for all of your help with this!

This week in math, we will….

•  Partition a rectangle and circle into 2 equal parts and into 4 equal parts

• Use the terms halves and half of to talk about the 2 equal parts into which a rectangle or circle has been partitioned, and use the terms fourths, quarters, fourth of, and quarter of to talk about the 4 equal parts into which a rectangle/circle has been partitioned

• Describe a whole rectangle or circle as 2 (4) of two (four) equal parts

• Create 3D Shapes during a STEM activity using toothpicks and marshmallows 

This week in science, we will…

• Start our unit on polar animals

• Learn about animals who migrate, hibernate, and adapt in winter.

• Distinguish long u and short u vowel sounds.

• Know vowel team sound-spellings for ew and ue. 

• Read irregularly spelled words (could, would, their, together).

• Identify the elements of a sentence.

• Review the use of periods and question marks.

• Read and write compound words.

• Read a poem titled, How much Dew?

• Read a nonfiction book about how animals adapt to cold weather. While reading, we will notice words with word endings (-er). We will also become aware that nonfiction text features are provided in different places and formats and make connections between text, illustrations, and print features.

• Read Jake’s 100th Day of School, by Lester Laminak.

This week in writing, we will…

• Continue our How To writing

• Use a revising and editing rubric to make our writing the best it can be!

• Make sure our how-to books have detailed pictures, a great introduction and a conclusion.

• Please continue working on your how-to at home presentation.  We will be sharing them with the class next week!

This week in math, we will….

• Identify, name, describe, compare three-dimensional shapes including cubes, rectangular prisms, and triangular prisms

• Build a three-dimensional shape with specific defining attributes

• Create a composite shape by composing three-dimensional shapes and compare and new shape using composite three-dimensional shapes

• Create a composite shape by composing two-dimensional shapes

• Continue learning about Our Country

• Read the book America Is… by Louise Borden and write about what we love about the USA

• Know vowel team sound-spellings for y and igh.

• Read irregularly spelled words (different, full, into, through)

• Identify the elements of a sentence and review proper sentence construction.

• Read and write words using comparatives and superlatives (-er and -est).

• Read a poem titled, Star Light, Sar Bright. We will locate words with the -igh vowel team and identify rhyming words. 

• Read a nonfiction book and infer an important idea during shared reading. We will also make connections between text and labeled photos. 

• Write a response to reading.

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

• Continue our How To writing

• Learn about commas and how we use them to separate items in a list

• Make sure we include very detailed steps in our how-to writing

• Begin turning our how-to steps into a book

• Learn about and make sure we are including transition words in our pieces

• Please make sure to talk to your child about what they plan to do for their how-to at home presentation and make sure to return the slip by February 1st!

This week in math, we will….

• There's a shape in my pocket.

• Learn about how you can combine shapes to create new shapes. For example two triangles create a rhombus. 

• Identify, name, describe, compare two-dimensional shapes including triangles, rhombuses, hexagons, and trapezoids.

• Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between the defining and non-defining attributes in shapes. Non-defining attributes include size and color. Defining attributes include vertices (corners), number of sides, parallel or perpendicular lines. 

• Draw a two-dimensional shape with specific defining attributes.

• Create a composite shape by composing two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, trapezoids, triangles, hexagons).

This week in social studies, we will…

• Continue learning about Our Country

• Learn more about the 50 states that make up our country and where Wisconsin is located on the map

• Learn about the American flag and the Pledge of Allegiance

• Blend sounds to produce words.

• Know sound-spellings for the vowel teams oa and ow.

• Read irregularly spelled words (part, people, more, or).

• Identify the elements of a sentence and understand the use of a comma.

• Read and write words ending with suffixes -ful and -less.

• Understand the meaning of new words that are supported by text and pictures during shared reading. We will also retell important events from the story and infer the lesson we can learn from the story. Finally, we will find words with -ed ending and practice using commas to determine how dialogue is read. 

• Read a poem titled, Snow, Snow, Fly Away. We will highlight vowel teams in the poem.

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

• Begin a new unit on How To writing

• Brainstorm topics for how-to books, thinking about things we are really good at that we could teach others

• Begin writing a how-to book by listing all of the materials we need and breaking down the writing step by step

This week in math, we will….

• Start Unit 5 all about shapes! 

• Organize data with up to 3 categories

•  Identify, name, describe, compare two-dimensional shapes including triangles, rectangles, hexagons, and trapezoids

• Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between the defining and non-defining attributes of a two-dimensional shape

• Draw a two-dimensional shape with specific defining attributes

This week in social studies, we will…

• Learn about the continents and oceans, then zoom in on North America

• Learn about the American Flag and our first president, George Washington
