April 17th Newsletter

 

April 17th-21st, 2023

For our upcoming writing unit, students will be creating a box set for a series they will be writing.  If you could please send in a cereal box wrapped with white construction or printer paper for your student to color on we would appreciate it! Please leave the top of the cereal box open. We would need them by April 21st.

This week in literacy, we will…

• Distinguish long i and long o vowel sounds.

• Know sound-spelling for long i and long o (-ild as in child, -ind as in kind, and -old as in cold).

• Read irregularly spelled words (even, never, most, another).

• Review contractions and the elements of a sentence.

• Distinguish shades of meaning among closely related words (big, huge, gigantic).

• Read a poem titled, The Wise Old Owl.

• Read a realistic fiction story titled Antonio and the Firefly, by June Schwartz. While reading, we will make predictions, understand the big idea of the story, and infer the main character's feelings. We will also recognize words with -ed endings and plurals ending in -s and -es. 

• Write a response to reading.

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

• Continue writing our realistic fiction stories

• Learn about verbs and make sure that we are going to describe characters’ actions by using exciting and interesting verbs

• Add dialogue into our stories using speech bubbles and quotation marks

• Show, don’t tell, the reader how the characters are feeling

This week in math, we will….

• Read Hanzel and Gretel and use their breadcrumb path math to help us count by 1’s, 5’s, and 10’s.

• Use representations to help us count by 1’s , 5’s, and 10’s 

• Count to 120, starting with any number less than 120, including 0 or 1

• Read and write numerals to 120

• Count by 5s and 10s to 100

• Add a 1-digit number and a 2-digit number

• Mentally find the number that is 10 more or 10 less than a given 2-digit number, without counting. For example: What is ten more than 53, ten less than 53, etc. 

This week in social studies, we will…

• Explore symbols that stand for our country and states.

• Describe ways we show respect for our country.

• Engage in conversations about symbols and what they mean.

• Draw our favorite symbol and write about why it's our favorite.

This week in literacy, we will…

• Know the sound-spellings of words with r-controlled vowel sounds (are, air, ear).

• Read irregularly spelled words (once, upon, yellow, live).

• Identify elements of a sentence and review the use of quotation marks.

• Read a poem titled Hickory, Dickory Dare. 

• We will read a funny book during shared reading! While reading, we will infer characters' feelings from dialogue, text, and pictures. We will also make predictions based on repeating episodes in the story. 

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

• Continue writing our realistic fiction stories

• Write a beginning of our story by introducing the characters and setting

• Work on the middle of our stories in which we include a problem and begin to have our characters try to solve the problem

• Use details to describe our characters’ actions

This week in math, we will….

• Start Unit 7

• Play two turns to build

• Demonstrate an understanding that the digits in a 2-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones

• Demonstrate an understanding that multiples of 10 from 10 to 90 refer to some number of tens and 0 one

• Demonstrate an understanding that 100 can be thought of a bundle or group of 10 tens, called a hundred

• Compare pairs of 3-digit numbers

This week in social studies, we will…

• explain why the colonists wanted independence

• explore what life was like in colonial America

• discuss why Independence Day is an important holiday

This week in literacy, we will…

• Know sound-spellings for au, aw, alk, alt, and all.

• Read irregularly spelled words (been, before, pretty, warm).

• Add syllables to make new words.

• Read and write words with the inflectional endings, s, ing, and ed.

• Add the prefixes pre-, un- and re- to words. 

• Read a poem titled, A Caterpillar Crawled. While reading, we will identify words with the aw vowel team. We will also locate quotation marks and make our voices reflect dialogue.

• Read Scrunch the Caterpillar, by Jennifer Morris. While reading, we will read words with inflectional endings and notice that -ed can represent different sounds (/t/- wrapped and /d/- bragged). We will also discuss how the characters change in the story and identify the lesson they learn.

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

• Write all about our spring break 

• Begin a new unit on realistic fiction

• Think of real people, places, and problems for our realistic fiction stories

This week in math, we will….

• Recognize, describe, and extend number patterns

• Count by 2s to 20 and beyond

• Group and count objects by 2s

• Look for and make use of structure

• Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

• Compare heights of different types of penguins

• Create a penguin pair graph as a class

This week in social studies, we will…

• Continue working together with our classmates to locate different states in the United States

• Begin learning about important U.S. symbols including the American Flag, The White House and the Liberty Bell

• Decode and spell one-syllable words with the /oi/ vowel team.

• Read irregularly spelled words (four, any, better, only).

• Identify the elements of a sentence and review the use of question marks.

• Read and write words with the suffixes -ful and -less.

• Read a poem titled, Jack-in-the-box. We will review vowel teams and contractions. 

• Read Zip, Zip, Zip, by Andrea Young. We will talk about important information in the book. We will also recognize beginning consonant clusters and compound words.

• Write a response to reading.

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

• Finish our non-fiction books

• Make covers for our non-fiction books

• Share a “published” non-fiction book with a small group

This week in math, we will….

• Use Emperor Penguins and Little Blue Penguins to do the following

• Compare pairs of 2-digit numbers

• Add with sums to 100

• Explain the reasoning behind a strategy used to add with sums to 100

• Express the length of an object as a whole number of units

• Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them

• Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others

This week in social studies, we will…

• Continue learning about symbols of the United States

• Learn about the states that border Wisconsin and the countries that border the United States

This week in literacy, we will...

• Decode and spell one-syllable words with the /ou/ spelling pattern.
• Read irregularly spelled words (after, pull, goes, laugh).
• Review contractions.
• Read and write compound words.
• Read a poem titled The Itsy, Bitsy, Spider. While reading, we will locate words with /ou/, We will also discuss what the spider is doing in the poem, and use context to understand unfamiliar vocabulary such as waterspout and itsy-bitsy. 
• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons.

This week in writing, we will...

• Continue working on non-fiction books.

• Add interesting introductions and conclusions to our books.

• Make sure we are including a lot of details, by adding comparisons and expanding sentences.

This week in math, we will...

• Solve story problems with sums to 20, involving situations of adding to and putting together, with unknowns in all positions.
• Tell time to the hour and half hour on an analog clock.
• Identify how much time has elapsed.
• Compare numbers 0-20.

This week in social studies, we will...

• Begin a new unit about United States symbols.
• Learn about maple syrup with a volunteer, Mr. Hammen. We will get to tap a tree in our outdoor classroom in the near future!

This week in literacy, we will…

• Distinguish short oo (book) and long oo (moon) vowel sounds.

• Read irregularly spelled words (about, write, word, done).

• Identify the elements of a sentence and review the use of end punctuation marks. 

• Read and write words with suffixes (-ly and -y).

• Read a poem titled Moon, Moon. While reading, we will locate words with the long oo vowel sound and other long vowel teams we know.

• Read a nonfiction narrative book titled, Boomer's Checkup during shared reading. While reading, we will infer an important idea and make personal connections to the text. We will also recognize plurals and contractions. 

• Write a response to reading.

• Sort words into categories based on their meaning to build an understanding of how words are related. 

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

• Continue working on our non-fiction books

• Make sure we are slow checking our words so that our writing sounds right and makes sense

• Include keywords that help our readers understand our topics

This week in math, we will….

• Apply the commutative property of addition to add

• Solve subtraction problems by finding an unknown addend

• Use the relationship between addition and subtraction to add and subtract within 20

• Use strategies to add and subtract within 20

• Use these strategies to solve word problems

• Use double flap cards to learn about fact families

• Continue learning about Arctic animals and how they adapt to their environment
