Last week we worked on book recommendations, and now we're going to begin focusing on toy recommendations!  We will work on our first one this week and we will learn how to include what we like about the toy, how to write an interesting beginning and we'll focus on punctuation and capitalization.  We are having lots of fun as we think about our opinions!

We will be sharing one of our book recommendations with a student from Ms. Wipperfurth's class on Thursday.  The kids are looking forward to partnering up with students from another class!

We will be focusing on blends this week in our word work center, read around the room, and a few other centers/activities.  The kids have been putting a lot of their center work on Seesaw!  I hope you're enjoying seeing all of their hard work.  Make sure to ask your child if a picture of their work doesn't make sense to you.  It is a great way for them to verbalize their learning. :-)

This week in math, we will...

  • Count forward and backward by 5s and 10s within 100 on a number line.
  • Learn a new Math Work Place called Frog Path.
  • Practice counting forward and backward by 10s on and off the decade using a number line. We will race on a number line making hops of 1, 5 and 10.

This week in science, we will...
  • Learn about animals' adaptations during winter.

We will be watching The Polar Express and having our Holiday party on Friday.  The kids are so excited!  Again, thank you to all of the generous parents who are donating food or items for our special day!  I greatly appreciate it!

If you haven't sent in a book for our exchange or The Polar Express permission slip, please do so ASAP!  Thank you!

This week we are finishing our hard work on writing book recommendations for our friends!  You may see some come home, but we're hanging on to one that we will be sharing with another 1st grade class.  Sharing our writing in an authentic way makes it more valuable and worthwhile to kids.  If you read your child's book recommendation and then make a trip to the Cedarburg Public Library, you could find that book and read it together!

In our reader's workshop we'll continue to read great recommended stories, and we are studying the vowel "e" and the different sounds it can make.  We are examining different words with "e" and deciding if they make the long sound, the short sound or are silent.  You can help by noticing signs while driving to activities and on errands.  Chances are, they know the word anyway, like when you're at Target.  Say "Target" and listen for that "e," which sound is it making?  We're also working really hard to find smaller words or chunks we know, that can help us when we're stuck on bigger words.  For example, the word "and" is inside "stands," and we can go from and, to stand, to stands.

This week in math, we will...
  • Use number lines to count by 1s, 5s and 10s, as well as find missing numbers on the number line through 120.
  • Solve addition and subtraction story problems involving multiples of ten by jumping on a floor number line. Students will record equations to represent the story problems.
  • Use the number line to practice adding and subtracting by counting on and counting back by 10s.
  • Learn a new Math Work Place called Super Frogs. To play, students hop their game marker along a number line to match an equation. The team with the greater sum or difference scores a point.
  • Identify and describe attributes of three-dimensional shapes.
  • Tell time to the hour.
This week in social studies, we will...
  • Learn about animal adaptation in winter.
  • Conduct a blubber experiment to learn how some animals keep warm in cold weather.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
This week we'll wrap up our "storyboard stories," by finishing our writing and our cover page.  The students will have an opportunity to read their stories to the class if they wish.  They are looking great and will be sent home soon.

Please remember, the stories your child comes home with will not perfect, there will be spelling mistakes, maybe punctuation or capitalization mistakes.  When I conference with students, one on one, with their writing, I choose one or two areas to focus on and work to lift their understanding in that area.  If we overwhelm them by pointing out every error, they will likely be turned off to writing and begin to think that writing is all about spelling and conventions, instead of sharing thoughts and ideas with others.  We will begin learning about how we share our opinions by writing book reviews later this week!  That will be so much fun!

This week in math we will...
  • Place and identify numbers on a life-sized open number line to develop number sense and an understanding of number relationships between 0-20.
  • Identify missing numbers on a life-sized open number line.
  • Use a number line to solve addition and subtraction problems within 10.
  • Play a game called The Frog Jump Game.

In social studies we will learn about different types of communities (rural, suburban, urban), places in our community and people in our community.

Scholastic Book Orders are due Monday, December 9th. We will have guaranteed delivery by winter break in case you're interested in purchasing some Christmas presents!  Go to: www.scholastic.com/bookclubs Online Code:  JBVLX

Thank you for taking time out of your busy schedules to come to parent-teacher conferences.  It was great to meet with you and talk about your wonderful children!  As always, if you have any additional questions or concerns please feel free to email me.

Happy Thanksgiving!!!

As you might be writing letters to Santa or working on gift lists with your children, I wanted to let you know that during this short week we are working on "letters that go with r," otherwise known as blends.  While we do want children to listen for sounds and write what they hear, if your child isn't hearing those blends at the beginning or words (such as truck, pretty, crib, freeze)  it would be great if you could help them stretch the word by saying it really slowly.  We are really focusing on getting both those sounds into our words.  Remember, it isn't necessary to spell the word correctly but those beginning sounds are really important right now!  We will also learn about syllables and identify syllables in one and two syllable words. We will look at the syllables in a word to read it. We will also say and clap the syllables to notice them in words.

This week in Math, we will...
  • Make trains of unifix cubes and compare the quantities verbally and by writing the inequality symbols < or >.
  • Express the difference between quantities by writing subtraction equations.
**There will be no math homework this week. Enjoy time with your family and friends over the Thanksgiving Holiday!

We will be finishing our communities social studies unit this week.  The children will be learning about maps and creating a make-believe community.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week we will be working with more blends, or as we call them "letters that go together."  Our students have been learning to hear those consonants that blend together at the beginning of many words, like: star, flame, climb, and snap.

This week we will begin to wrap up our work with the narratives we are working on.  We started the piece with oral storytelling to a partner, moved to illustrating a story board to guide our writing and then began our writing.  This week and into next week we'll focus on editing and publishing by giving our narratives a title and a cover, like a real book!

We will also be writing letters to Santa!  We will be mailing them off to the North Pole and hope to get a response by winter break.

This week we will also be circling back to the topic of friendship.  We'll be reading some stories and discussing how to be a good friend.  If you can find a few minutes to have a conversation with your son or daughter about kindness and respect for others it would be much appreciated.  Your support really helps strengthen these concepts.

This week in math...
  • Play a game called Fifty or Bust! While playing this game, students will group and count objects by 10 to understand that 10 can be thought of as a bundle of 10 ones, called a ten.
  • Write addition expressions to match Unifix cube trains. We will examine the trains and expressions to find equivalent expressions.
  • Compare pairs of Unifix cube trains and notice how many cubes the two trains have in common. The extra cubes on one train will be the viewed as the difference between the two trains. We will write subtraction equations to show the difference.
  • Divide brownies into halves and fourths as we continue working with fractions. Yum!
  • Continue working on telling time to the hour.

We will continue working on our Communities unit in Social Studies.  We will discuss how people work together to make their communities a good place to live.  We will also work with reading and making maps of our classroom, home and neighborhood.

Please label your child's winter gear! There are a lot of mittens and hats making their way to the Lost and Found already!

We have been working very hard on fluency for the last few weeks, but this past week we marked one of our poems in phrases of two to four words.  We read the lines in different ways to see what sounded better.  When we were all done, we read the poem, paying attention to the phrases we had marked.  What a difference it made!  Our first graders are starting to really understand how reading should sound.  We are also working hard on this in guided reading.  When you read the take home books with your child, be sure prompt him or her to "read it like this," as you model it, in a few places.  Remember that reading picture books to your child is still very important.  They need to hear you model that phrased, fluent reading!  Keep up the great work!

This week in math we will...

  • Use number racks to show and discuss various combinations of 10.
  • Explore part-part-whole relationships through 20.
  • Solve addition and subtraction story problems using number racks.
  • View double ten-frames with matching "10 and some more" equations, build the sum with Unifix cubes, and write the equation.
  • Play a game called Fifty or Bust to group and count objects by 10s, understand that the digits in a 2-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones, and use concrete models to add with sums to 100.
  • Continue working with the fractions whole, halves and fourths.
  • Continue learning about telling time to the hour.

In social studies we will learn about families and communities.  We will make a family tree and talk about all of the responsibilities we have within our family.

Welcome to second quarter!  It's so exciting to reflect on the growth of our class from the beginning of the year to now!  In just a little over two months our students are thinking about what would make sense when they are stuck on an unfamiliar word, and then they cross-check that with the letters on the page to make sure it looks right too.  Just to be sure, they know how to "slow check" the word by running their finger slowly under the letters of the word to see if the letters match the sounds they make as they slowly say the word.  This strategy also works great in writing too!

In writing, we are working on finishing up our small moment stories and this week we'll be doing a study of punctuation.  We've learned a lot about how writers write about what they know, and so we've worked on writing about small moments from our lives.  We take one small moment and write lots about it.  We write about what happened, how we felt and what we thought.  Many of us are remembering to punctuate some of our sentences already, and hopefully we'll get closer to punctuating every sentence soon!

This week in Math, we will...
  • Build our knowledge of doubles and near doubles facts using number racks.
  • Learn that even numbers can be arranged as equal halves. We will identify whether numbers are odd or even.
  • Solve addition and subtraction story problems using number racks.
  • Make combinations of numbers through 10. The children will have the opportunity to practice decomposing numbers while playing a new game in Math Workplaces called "Tower Race".
  • Practice adding with sums to 20 by playing a new game in Math Workplaces called "Doubles Plus or Minus One".
  • Explore wholes, halves and fourths.
  • Learn about parts of a clock, discuss the numerals on the clock and their meaning and compare an analog clock to a linear timeline.
  • Identify a variety of patterns on our Calendar Grid Markers during Number Corner.

This week in Social Studies, we will learn about bullying prevention with Mrs. Kikkert and continue our unit on land and water.

Please sign up for parent-teacher conferences if you haven't done so already.  Also, if you need an alternative date/time, please don't hesitate to ask!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

The last few weeks in literacy we did some focused work with vowels.  Vowels are tricky, and if we don't continue to notice and emphasize them they can be very confusing.  We found them in our shared reading poems, we created a vowel chart, and we've been finding them on various print around the classroom.  We've been practicing both the short and the long sounds for the vowels.  You can help at home by doing the same with words you notice when reading with your child or even when looking at a holiday catalog or a recipe!  Help your child understand that words are all around us, and they all have to have at least one vowel.  Keep in mind, it is best to use words that either have the short or the long sound in them, like in "bat," but not "ball."  Or in "that," but not in "the."

This week we will continue our first study of small moment (or narrative) stories for the year.  We are hoping to be done with this unit next week.  Some stories will continue to come home, and some will be saved for parent teacher conferences.  It sure has been fun to learn more about these amazing kids and get to know them in the best way, through their stories!  I've learned about their friends, their pets, their families, their weekend adventures and more!  Keep the stories coming!

This week in Math, we will...
  • Count by 5's and 10's with nickels and dimes when playing games called "Who Has More Cents with Nickels & Pennies" and "Who Has More Cents with Dimes, Nickels and Pennies."
  • Compare amounts using the terms greater than, less than and equal to.
  • Play a game called "Drop the Beans" to practice fluently adding sums within 10, apply the commutative property when adding and organize/represent data on a graph.
  • Make a variety of combinations of 10 by matching ten frames.
  • Learn several new Math Workplace games to reinforce these skills!
**Math homework is due on Monday, because of the short week.

This week in Social Studies, we will learn about land forms, bodies of water, and using globes and maps. We will also continue to learn about bullying prevention with Mrs. Kikkert.

**Children can bring their costumes to school on Thursday in a labeled bag. They will change into them before our Fall Party! It's going to be a fun day, and a fun week.  Thank you in advance for all of the help and donations for our Halloween Classroom Party!  The kids had a blast!

Remember to dress your child for the cold weather.  They will be going outside for every recess unless it rains.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

During our literacy block, one very important time of our day is called Community Writing.  During this time, we do some writing together as a whole group, that relates back to a book we read or an experience we had.  For example, after a big book we read called, "In a Dark, Dark Wood," we wrote our own version called "In a Dark, Dark School!"  It was so much fun to share ideas and write the story together.  We work on composing a message, listening for the sounds in the word, spelling word wall words (sight words) correctly, and letter formation.  One goal is to keep the purpose of the writing very authentic, so we also wrote a letter to Mrs. Staffaroni's class (by vote) and asked them if they'd like to read our book.  It was very exciting to have a real audience for our writing!

We are really growing as writers, this week we'll focus on telling a story part by part, so that we understand how to include a beginning, a middle, and an end.  See what authentic ways you can get your child writing at home!  They could help with the grocery list, or write a letter to a family member, or keep a diary/journal.  Seeing parents write at home is also very supportive!

This week in Math, we will...
  • Represent subtraction on a nu`mber line and by counting back. We will practice these skills by playing a game called Spin & Subtract.
  • Determine how many more we need to make five and 6 (I have 3, how many more do I need to make 5/6).
  • Explore multiples of 5 by making a class "Sea Star" quilt. We will observe patterns that involve 5s, as well as count by 5s and 10s.

Example of "Sea Star" quilt- We will notice patterns, count the stars "arms" by 5s, etc.

We will be starting our Land and Water unit in Science.  The students will learn about landforms, bodies of water, and using globes and maps.  We will also learn about bullying prevention with Mrs. Kikkert.

Dear Parents and Guardians,
We're off to a great start in guided reading!  All groups have met with multiple times and I'm just so proud of these 1st grade readers!  Please remember when reading at home that it is very important to give children lots of practice with reading text that they are able to read well.  This means fluent reading that sounds good!   Don't be fooled into thinking that your child isn't learning or progressing unless they're struggling or working hard to decode.  Their reading should sound like good reading.  If the reading doesn't sound fluent, feel free to try reading together for a few pages.  It will help your child to hear your fluent reading of the same text he/she is reading.

This week during literacy, we'll continue to learn the routines of guided reading and we'll also be focusing on complete sentences.  You can help at home by encouraging your child to speak in complete sentences.  When they use an incomplete sentence, model what the complete sentence version would sound like and have them repeat it.  This will support our work in writer's workshop as we make sure we are beginning with a capital letter and using ending punctuation in our complete sentences.

Our students have been working very hard on a small moment (narrative) story that spans multiple pages.  They have been adding to their stories day by day as well as making corrections such as capital letters and ending punctuation.  Take a look at them when they come home.  You will be so proud!

In math this week, we will...
  • Write equations for fact families to understand the commutative property (changing the order of the addends does not change the sum). Students will write math stories to match the addition and subtraction equations they write for their fact families.
  • Use <, >, and = symbols to record comparisons of the total dots on dominoes.
  • Recognize, represent, and solve addition combinations to 12 using dominoes. We will share our strategies for adding.
  • Learn doubles addition facts through 6+6 using dominoes.
  • Learn new Math Workplace games called "Double It" and "Spin & Subtract".

This week in Science/Social Studies, we will finish our unit on Animals in Fall and learn about bullying prevention with Mrs. Kikkert.

Now that the cold weather is here, please label your child's winter gear with their first and last name!!  Also, we will be going outside unless it is raining or below 0, so please send warm clothing for your child!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week we'll get started with guided reading, now that we have learned how to do each of our centers.  Our centers have become one of the favorite parts of our day.  During this time students are reading independently or with a buddy, or with a small group.  In some centers we read with big pointers and in some we're reading the poems we learn during shared reading.  A favorite is the listening center, where students use iPads and their headphones to listen to a variety of picture books, which are changed monthly.  We're also doing some word work, some free writing, and even some art!  Often we will be illustrating pieces of writing we did as a whole group and either creating a big book or hanging them in the hallway to share.

This week in math we will...
  • Use strategies to add within 20 using dominoes.
  • Solve number puzzles called Magic Squares. The children will use two dominoes arranged one above the other to form two rows and two columns of dots. We will find the sums of both rows across and both columns down, then we will add the results of the rows and the results of the columns. We will observe that the sums are the same. Magic!!
  • Explore fact families using dot cards.
  • Write fact family equations, and write story problems for our equations.
  • Play a game called Sort the Sum during Math Work Places.

This week we will learn and write about animals that we see in the fall.  We will learn more about what it means when animals migrate, hibernate, and adapt and some of the animals that do these things to prepare for winter.

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week, we'll be working on making our stories clear and understandable, by telling them in sequence.  In reading, we will focus on thinking about what word would make sense when we get stuck reading because "sounding it out" doesn't work all the time.  We'll also practice retelling some of our stories, making sure to include the important parts of the story.  This will help us understand what we should be paying attention to in a story.  Both of these skills will be something we practice a lot throughout the year.

Please remember that reading to you child is extremely important.  Modeling for your child with expression and sharing what you are thinking will truly set your child up for success later on.  Thank you so much for your support!

Our take-home book program will begin today!  Please remember to initial and return the books after you have read them so that your child can bring home new books.  Thank you for reading with your child each night at home.  It is extremely important!

In math this week we will...
  • Use dominoes to estimate the number of dots and compare quantities using <, > and = symbols.
  • Use dominoes to find total number of dots. We will use counting strategies including instant recognition of small quantities (subitizing), counting on, making 10 and working from a known sum to one that is less familiar. We will play a game called "Domino Top Draw".
  • Write addition equations using dots on a domino.
  • Read a story titled, Domino Addition, by Lynette Long.
  • Practice writing numbers 9 and 10.

This week in science we will be learning about animals that we see in the fall.  We will be learning about these animals by reading non-fiction stories and using an online resource called Pebble Go.

Our class earned five tally marks and they voted for a pajama day.  Your child can wear their pajamas to school this Thursday!

Dear Parents and Guardians,

This week in literacy we are working together as a class to write our own version of the book "In a Dark, Dark Wood" which is a class favorite!  Our version is titled:  "In a Dark, Dark School."  We choose what happens in our story, and the students take turns coming up to the big book we are creating and write some of the letters and words.  This is important because we teach and reinforce many things at this time, such as using spaces between words, proper letter formation, sound and letter correspondence, using our word wall to correctly spell some words, capitalization, punctuation and more!  Stay tuned for photos of our book!  We work at this a little each day, so our shared reading, centers, interactive read aloud and writing workshop are all still going on.  This week, the listening center, buddy reading center and word work center will all be added to our work board.  We're staying busy!

This week in math we will...
