March 28, 2022

This week in literacy, we will…

• Review the letter-sound correspondences for long vowel combinations ay, ai, ee, ea, ie, oa, oo, ou, ow, au and aw

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons

• Read a book titled Squawk, by Nicole Walker. While reading, we will understand big ideas or messages in the story and infer the characters' feelings. 

• Read a poem titled Sing a Rainbow. We will read color words and find words with long vowel combinations in the poem.

In Writing this week, we will… 

• Write and share about the things we did over Spring Break

• Begin our Poetry Unit

• Make a “Poet-tree” in which we discuss several poem types/styles. Specifically this week, we will explore Color Poems and I-Wish Poems

In math this week, we will… 

• Solve addition problems by counting on

• Add fluently with sum to 10

• Add with sums to 20 

• Model with mathematics

• Recognize the number of objects in a collection of 6 of fewer

• Use >, <, = symbols to record comparisons

In Social Studies this week, we will continue our Our Country unit.  We will…

• Use a map of the United States to locate states, oceans, and our neighboring countries

• Begin learning about important US symbols including the Liberty Bell, the American flag, Mount Rushmore, The White House, and the Washington Monument

This week in literacy, we will…

• Construct and read words containing short vowel closed syllables and long vowel Silent e syllables

• We will notice Silent e and closed syllable spelling patterns that help read and spell longer words

• Read a book titled, The Big Surprise by Pat McCann. While reading, we will tell the major events of the story and infer the feelings of the characters. We will also recognize verbs with -ed endings.

• Read a poem titled, Jack-in-the-box. We will look for words with open and closed syllables and read words with vowel combinations.

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons

In Writing this week, we will… 

• Finish our How-To books in class

• Share our How-To Projects with the class 

In math this week, we will… 

•  Apply the commutative property of addition to add

•  Solve subtraction problems by finding an unknown addend

•  Use the relationship between addition and subtraction to add and subtract within 20

•  Use strategies to add and subtract within 20

• Solve for the unknown in an addition or subtraction equation involving 3 whole numbers

•  Reason abstractly and quantitatively

In Social Studies this week, we will begin a new unit on Our Country.  We will…

• Learn about North America and how it is made up of many different counties

• Learn about the 50 states that make up the United States

This week in literacy, we will…

• Learn that an open syllable ends with a single vowel that makes its long sound

• Construct and read two-syllable words in which the first syllable is open

• Construct and read words containing long vowel Silent e syllables

• Read The Hungry Fly, by Hannah Cales. While reading, we will use repeating patterns to monitor accuracy. We will infer the important idea from the book and make connections between text and labeled photographs. We will also recognize simple plurals, notice and count syllables, and read words with initial consonant clusters.

• Read a poem titled, The Little Green Frog. While reading, we will locate are read words with vowel combinations

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Activities

In Writing this week, we will… 

• Write an introduction in our How-To books

• Write a conclusion in our How-To books

• Utilize our How-To Rubrics when editing and revising 

• Create a Table of Contents 

• Prepare our books for publishing

In math this week, we will… 

• Solve addition story problems with sums to 20 involving situations of adding to and putting together, with unknowns in all positions.

• Solve addition problems by counting on

• Use strategies to add with sums to 20

• Determine whether addition equations are true

• Solve for the unknown in an addition equation involving 3 whole numbers

• Demonstrate an understanding that numbers from 11 to 19 are composed of a 10 and some more ones

• Count by 2s to 20

• Group and count objects by 2s

In Science this week, we will finish our unit on polar animals.  We will…

• Learn more about penguins and snowy owls

• Sort animals based on if they migrate, hibernate or adapt

• Complete a blubber experiment, which is always a first grade favorite!

• Use knowledge that every syllable must have a vowel to determine the number of syllables in a word
• Distinguish long from short vowel sounds in single-syllable words
• Learn that a “closed syllable” has one vowel, closed in a consonant, and has a short sound
• Read The Hungry Fly, by Hannah Cales. While reading, we will use repeating patterns to monitor accuracy. We will infer the important idea from the book and make connections between text and labeled photographs. We will also recognize simple plurals, notice and count syllables, and read words with initial consonant clusters.
• Read a poem titled, Little Raindrops. We will talk about syllables, vowel teams and contractions while reading the poem
• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons

This week in writing, we will: 

• Include detailed steps in our How-To Writing

• Transfer our rough draft ideas onto our writing pieces to create complete books

• Include transition words and phrases where appropriate

• Edit and revise using the How-To Writing rubric

This week in math, we will: 

• Identify, name, describe and compare two-dimensional shapes including triangles, rectangles, hexagons, squares, rhombuses, circles, and trapezoids

• Draw two-dimensional shapes with specific defining attributes

• Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories

• Answer questions about the total number of data points in a set of data and how many more or fewer data points are in each category

•  Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between the defining and non-defining attributes of a two-dimensional shape

This week in science, we will: 

• Learn about the polar bear, seal, walrus, Arctic fox, Arctic hare, and penguins.  We will even get to check out live cameras for each of these animals

This week in literacy, we will…

• Learn the letter-sound correspondences for oo, ue and ew, where the two letters make the /oo/ sound, as in moon, due and few

• Learn the letter-sound correspondences for the vowel combination au and aw, where the two letters make the sounds we hear in law and haul

• Read a book titled The Frog Who Couldn’t Jump by Lionel Page. While reading, we will summarize the problem of the story and infer the main character’s traits from story events. We will also understand the meaning of past tense verbs with -ed endings and review contractions.

• Read a poem titled “Moon, Moon”

• Write a “How-To” writing piece as a class

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons

In Writing this week, we will… 

• Begin our How-To Unit

• Understand what procedural nonfiction is

• Brainstorm topics for our How-To books

• Add lists for the supplies/materials readers will need in our How-To texts

• Add commas at appropriate times

In math this week, we will… 

• Partition a rectangle into halves and fourths

• Partition a circle into halves and fourths

• Describe halves and fourths and which you would rather have

• Play fraction bingo with different shapes 

• Take the Unit 5 Assessment

This week during our Science we will be starting a new unit on polar animals.  We will…

• Learn about hibernation, migration, and animal adaptations

• Learn about polar bears

• Learn the letter-sound correspondences for ow and ou, where the two letters make the /ou/ sound, as in cow and cloud 

• Learn the letter-sound correspondences for the vowel teams oi and oy, where the two vowels make the /oi/ sound, as in coin and boy

• Read a book titled Scrunch the Caterpillar by Stephen Krensky. While reading, we will identify how characters change throughout the story and a lesson we can learn from the characters. We will also understand the meaning of past tense verbs with -ed endings and clap syllables in words. 

• Read a poem titled “Out”.

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons

In Writing this week, we will… 

• Continue researching topics to teach others about

• Use craft moves in our writing to make our writing more interesting

• Edit our work using an editing checklist

• Read our chapter books to partners 

In math this week, we will… 

• Identify and name three-dimensional shapes including pyramids 

• Build a three-dimensional shape with specific defining attributes 

• Create a composite shape by compositing 2-D shapes

• Understand and define the difference between  the defining and non-defining attributes of a 3D shape

• Take a 3D shape checkpoint

This week during our Social Studies we will…

• Continue to learn about the winter Olympics events and Olympians!

• Learn the letter-sound correspondences for the long vowel teams   ie and oe, where the two vowels make the long vowel sound. 

• Read a book titled Ripples in the Sea by Miriam Glassman. While reading, we will make connections between text, illustrations and print features. We will also understand the meaning of words that represent sounds (swoosh, smack) and recognize words with beginning consonant blends. 

• Read a poem titled  Hearts

• Read books about the 100th Day of School, including  Jake’s 100th Day of School by Lester Laminack, I’ll Teach My Dog 100 Words by Michael Frith, Chicka Chicka, 1,2,3 by Bill Martin Jr. and Michael Sampson, and One Hundred Days (Plus 1) by Margaret McNamara

• Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons

In Writing this week, we will… 

• Use all we know to write chapter books 

• Research topics to incorporate facts and information in our books

• Edit and revise our work 

• Write about what we would be doing when we are 100 years old for the 100th day of school 

In math this week, we will… 

• Identify, name, describe, compare three-dimensional shapes including cubes, rectangular prisms, triangular prisms, pyramids, cylinders, cones, and spheres

• Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between the defining and non-defining attributes of a three-dimensional shapes

•  Build a three-dimensional shape with specific defining attributes

•  Create a composite shape by composing three-dimensional shapes and compare and new shape using composite three-dimensional shapes

• Look for and make use of structure

• Take a Shape Check in
