This week in literacy, we will…

  • Know sound-spellings of final e words with a_e and i_e patterns.

  • Read irregularly spelled words (that, of, water, carry).

  • Distinguish long and short vowel sounds.

  • Identify the elements of a sentence.

  • Read and write words containing soft c and soft g.

  • Infer the feelings of characters, identify the setting, and tell the major events of a story during shared reading. We will also recognize and use verbs with -ed endings. 

  • Read a poem titled, Five Little Mice. We will read and identify words with the i_e spelling pattern and rhyming words.

  • Write a response to reading.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Finish our opinion writing unit

  • Add conjunctions to our writing

  • Use a checklist to revise and edit our writing

  • Share our opinion pieces with our classmates


This week in math, we will….

  • Start Unit 4 a parent letter will be sent home with your student

  • Represent addition on a number line

  •  Recognize and extend number patterns

  • Count to 120, starting with any number less than 120, including 0 or 1

  • Read numerals to 120

  • Count by 2s to 20


This week in social studies, we will…

  • Continue our Neighborhoods unit

  • Continue creating our own maps

  • Read the book Officer Buckle and Gloria by Peggy Rathmann and talk about why we have rules and why it’s important to follow them

  • Mrs. Kikkert will come in to teach a lesson on Bullying Prevention

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Blend sounds to produce words with r-blends.

  • Spell words with r-blends.

  • Read irregularly spelled words (said, when, there, where).

  • Identify the elements of a sentence.

  • Read and write contractions.

  • Read The Great Detective by Stephen Krensky. While reading, we will notice words with consonant blends and inflectional ending (-s, -ing and -ed). We will notice aspects of dialogue and use those aspects to decide how the dialogue should be read. We will also discuss the sequence of events in the story. 

  • Write a response to reading.

  • Read a poem titled, The Squirrel and highlight words with r-blends.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons

This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue our opinion writing unit by working on conclusions to our pieces

  • Use a checklist to edit and revise our writing

  • Work with a partner to give writing checkups

  • Write about the things we are thankful for and create a thankful turkey


This week in math, we will….

  • Learn one new workplace called “Cats & Mice”. 

  • Use number racks to solve subtraction as a process of comparing two quantities to find the difference.

  • Put together 10 and some more to make numbers from 11 to 20.

  • Learn the warm-up game “Number in my Pocket” and work toward learning a new game called “Fifty or Bust”.

  • Continue November Number Corner workouts of whole, halves, and fourths, and continue to collect hours each day on digital and analog clocks. 


This week in social studies, we will…

  • Continue our Neighborhoods unit

  • Read Be My Neighbor by Maya Ajmera and John Ivanko and discuss how to live and work together in a community

  • Mrs. Kikkert will come in to teach a lesson on Bullying Prevention

November 7-11 Newsletter

 

 This week in literacy, we will...

  • Blend sounds to produce words with s-blends.
  • Read and write words with final blends.
  • Read irregularly spelled words (call, from, which, very).
  • Read a story titled Snail's Big Adventure by David Earl. While reading, we will recognize and use -ed and -ing endings. We will also infer the meaning of events from a snail's perspective, infer reasons for Snail's feelings and notice the author's word choice. 
  • Identify the elements of a sentence.
  • Understand and use quotation marks.
  • Read a poem titled, "A Snail". We will notice quotation marks in the poem, highlight words with s-blends and discuss the meaning of unknown words. 
  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will...

  • Continue working on opinion writing.

  • Read the book "The Day the Crayons Quit

  • Write a persuasive letter to one of the crayons telling them why we think they are important so they don’t quit - be sure to look for these projects in the hallway during parent/teacher conferences!

This week in math, we will...

  • Learn 2 new workplaces called “Doubles Plus or Minus One” and “Tower Race”

  • Use number racks to solve addition and subtraction story problems.

  • Continue November Number Corner workouts of whole, halves, and fourths, and continue to collect hours each day on digital and analog clocks.

This week in social studies, we will...

  • Begin a new unit about Neighborhoods.

  • Learn about different types of homes and how each home is different.

  • Listen to the book A House is a House for Me and think about different homes that animals have.

  • Learn about maps and begin creating a map of our classroom, bedroom, or house.
