October 2nd Newsletter

 

October 2nd, 2023

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Know the sound-spelling for short "e".

  • Read irregularly spelled words (give, come, some, for).

  • Recognize and produce rhyme.

  • Identify elements of a sentence.

  • Read and form plural nouns.

  • Read a poem titled The Elephant Who Jumped the Fence. While reading we will highlight sight words we've learned and find words with the short "e" sound. 

  • Read a book titled, The Elephant, by Cordelia Finn S. Finn. While reading, we will infer information from photos and text features. We will also talk about how the photographs help us understand information. 

This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue our unit on Narrative Writing

  • Learn to use familiar words to spell new words

  • Add drama to our stories to bring them to life

  • Learn to edit our writing and check for capitalization and punctuation

This week in math, we will….

  • Start unit 2 of math

  • Recognize the number of objects in a collection of 6 of fewer

  • Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group

  • Add within 20

  • Use >, <, and = symbols to compare

  • Learn different addition strategies

This week in science we will….

  • Learn how to be a respectful digital citizen

  • Practice being a digital citizen with our chromebooks

September 25th Newsletter

 

September 25th, 2023

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Know the sound-spelling for short "u".

  • Read irregularly spelled words (little, with, have, are).

  • Identify elements of a sentence. 

  • Read and write words ending with double final consonants.

  • Read a poem titled, My Apple. While reading, we will highlight high frequency words we know and identify words with short vowel sounds. 

  • Read a nonfiction book titled, Animal Surprises, by Nicole Walker. While reading, we will use context to understand the meaning of new words. We will also notice photographs and talk about what is important in text. 

This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue our unit on Narrative Writing

  • Work on unfreezing our characters by including a lot of details and making our characters think and feel

  • Tell our stories in itty bitty steps so our readers can create detailed mind movies

This week in math, we will….

  • Solve subtraction problems by finding an unknown addend

  • Solve subtraction problems by counting back

  • Use the relationship between addition and subtraction to add and subtract within 20

  • Play “Number Rack Detectives” 

  • Measure with cubes and learn a new measurement workplace 

This week in science we will….

  • Continue our unit on Land and Water

  • Learn about bodies of fresh-water and the importance of water

  • Learn about fast and slow land changes

This week we will be starting library class! Our library day is Wednesday. This year every other week is going to be a checkout time. The other weeks will be a library lesson in the library or makerspace. 


We will also be sending home sight word list with directions on Monday! Please work on these with your student. 


This week in literacy, we will…

  • Know the sound-spelling for short "o".

  • Read irregularly spelled words (and, stop, jump, see).

  • Recognize and produce rhyme.

  • Understand the use of an exclamation mark.

  • Read and write words ending with double final consonants.

  • Read a poem titled, The Big Balloon. We will read this poem with expression and highlight words with short "o" vowel sounds. 

  • Read a story titled, The Frog Who Couldn't Jump, by Lionel Page. While reading, we will summarize the problem and solution in the story and infer the characters' traits from story events. 

This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue our unit on Narrative Writing

  • Work on stretching out words to spell and writing down a letter for each sound we hear

  • Zoom in on one small moment.  We will focus on writing a tiny seed story instead of a big watermelon story.

  • Share our writing with partners!

This week in math, we will….

  • Add with sums to 10

  • Solve for an unknown number

  • Count by 10s to 100

  • Find missing numbers is story problems 

  • Solve story problems

  • Play “show me the number” and “Which coin will win”

  • Measure with popsicle sticks

  • Subitize with number racks

This week in science we will….

  • Continue our unit on Land and Water

  • Learn about landforms

  • Learn about rocks and minerals

  • Begin learning about the importance of water

September 11th Newsletter

September 11, 2023

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Know the sound-spelling for short "i".

  • Read irregularly spelled words (what, to, do, this).

  • Read and write verbs with inflectional endings -s.

  • Read Chicken Licken by Owen Peterson during shared reading. While reading, we will use story elements to predict what will happen next and infer the message of the story.

  • Read a poem titled, Dig a Little Hole. We will highlight high frequency words we know and find words with short i sounds.

  • Practice literacy center routines. 


This week in writing, we will…

  • Begin a unit on Narrative Writing

  • Write stories about things that have happened to us

  • Include detailed pictures to add more to our writing

  • Make sure we answer the questions Who? Where? When? What? How? in our writing

This week in math, we will….

  • Learn how to use our number racks we made last week! 

  • Count objects one by one

  • Count up to 20 objects in a line or array

  • Group objects by 5s and 10s

  • Play “Show me on your number rack”

  • Play “Ten Frame Flash”

  • Learn a new workplace “Flip and write” 

This week in science we will….

  • Start our unit on Land and Water

  • Be rock detectives and investigate rocks

  • Learn about different types of landforms and bodies of water

  • Learn about how we use Earth’s land
