This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish long i and short i vowel sounds.

  • Know the vowel team sound-spellings for long i (igh, y and i_e).

  • Read irregularly spelled words (different, full, into, through).

  • Read and write words using comparatives and superlatives (-er and -est).

  • Read a poem titled Star Light, Star Bright. We will read words with the -igh spelling pattern and highlight high frequency words we know. 

  • Read a book titled, The Hungry Fly, by Hannah Cales. While reading, we will infer important ideas from the text and make connections between text and labeled photos. 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.


This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue working on our how-to writing unit

  • Transfer our one page how-to writing pieces to create complete books

  • Include transition words in our how-to writing pieces

  • Revise and edit our how-to writing

This week in math, we will….

  • Add Fluently with sums to 20

  • Identify, name, describe squares

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between the defining and non-defining attributes of a three-dimensional shape

  • Create a composite shape by composing two-dimensional shapes

  • Create patterns while making quilt squares

  • Create fractions out of circles and squares including 1/2 ,¼, and ¾ 

This week in social studies we will….

  •  Learn about the constitution and why it is important to America

  • Learn about the symbols of America

A friendly reminder that we are halfway through the school year. Your student should be about halfway done (13 lists) with their take home sight word lists! 


This week in literacy, we will…

  • Continue learning about the vowel team sound-spellings for long o (oa, ow, silent e).

  • Read and write words ending with the suffixes -ful and -less. 

  • Read a book titled The Farmer and the Crow. We will infer a lesson from the story, and retell important events.

  • Read a poem titled, The Snowman. We will highlight words with -ow sounds and compound words in the poem.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue working on our how-to writing unit

  • Learn about how we need to include a list of materials at the beginning of our pieces and include commas in the list of items

  • Learn about the importance of including very specific details in order to teach our readers

This week in math, we will….

  • Play Shape detectives

  • Walk around the school on a 3D shape hunt

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between the defining and non-defining attributes of 3D shapes

  • Play “Whats in my bag?” 

  • Create our own 3D shapes 

This week in social studies we will….

  • Start a new unit “Celebrating America”

  • Learn about the White House

  • Learn about why we celebrate independence day

  • Learn about important people such as Benjamin Franklin, Harriet Tubman, and more!

  • Jan 22. - Take home “How to Project” selected and pink sheet due. Project is not due until February.

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Read irregularly spelled words (part, people, more, or).

  • Read a poem titled, Snow, Snow, Fall Away. We will locate words with ow spelling patterns.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Work on our Handwriting Without Tears journals

  • Write about how to catch a gingerbread man

This week in math, we will….

  • Learn and play “Last Shape Wins”

  • Identify, name, describe, compare two-dimensional shapes including triangles, rhombuses, hexagons, and trapezoids

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between the defining and non-defining 

  • Draw a two-dimensional shape with specific defining attributes

  • Create a composite shape by composing two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, trapezoids, triangles, hexagons)


This week in science we will….

  • Continue our Rokenbok engineering unit

  • Create different designs and explore how to make our designs stronger

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Continue learning about the vowel team sound-spellings ee, ea, and silent e.

  • Identify the elements of a sentence and understand the use of a comma.

  • Read a poem titled, Cap, Mittens, Shoes, and Socks to the tune of "Head, Shoulders, Knees, and Toes". We will categorize words and locate words we know in the poem.

  • Read a book titled, The Gingerbread Girl. by Jack Henry Paris. We will infer a lesson from this folktale. We will notice aspects of dialogue and decide how it should sound and how it adds to the story. Finally, we will infer the characters' feelings.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Learn about our new writing unit, How-To writing

  • Create a list of things we could teach others

  • Begin our first How-To piece!

This week in math, we will….

  • Start Unit 5

  • Organize data with up to 3 categories

  • Identify, name, describe, compare two-dimensional shapes including triangles, rectangles, hexagons, and trapezoids

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between the defining and non-defining attributes of a two-dimensional shape

  • Draw a two-dimensional shape with specific defining attributes

  • Learn and Play “Last Shape Wins”

This week in science we will….

  • Start a Rokenbok engineering unit.

  • Manipulate ROK Blocks to build structures (bridges, trucks, and castles).

  • Explore a specific problem engineers often face (how to make things stronger).

  • Understand that pushes on objects can have different strengths and that bigger pushes cause bigger changes in the object.

  • Test constructions for strength; Try to improve strength by using different designs.
