October 30th, 2023


This week in literacy, we will…

  • Blend sounds to produce words with digraphs sh and th.

  • Read irregularly spelled words (were, gave, go, first).

  • Identify elements of a sentence and understand the use of quotation marks.

  • Read and write words with the inflectional ending -ed.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons.

  • Read a poem titled, Dingle, Dangle Scarecrow. We will highlight words with digraphs, notice the author's word choice, and locate high frequency words. 

  • Read Food Store in the Woods, by Reese Brooks. While reading, we will talk about what is interesting in an illustration and discuss important information in a text.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Start a new unit on opinion writing.

  • Watch a dog show and judge the dogs according to which one is our favorite and give reasons why

This week in math, we will….

  • We will start Unit 3 in math! 

  • Apply the commutative property of addition to add

  • Add fluently with sums to 10

  • Solve for the unknown in an addition equation involving 3 whole numbers

  • Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to 3 categories

  • Play “Drop the Beans” and play “Make the Sum”

  • Practice our doubles facts and our doubles plus and minus one facts

This week in social studies we will….

  • Learn how to “Think Like a Historian” by exploring what social studies is and how we can be social studies detectives

  • Begin our first unit on “Being a Good Citizen”

  • Learn about how rules and laws help us

Reminders - Please send a coat, hat and mittens with your child as the days are getting colder.  Our recess is in the morning and the temperature is not at the high for the day. Have your child practice getting his/her outdoor gear on independently. It's also recommended to label all items so they don't end up in the lost and found!

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Blend sounds to produce words with r-blends.

  • Read irregularly spelled words (said, when, there, where).

  • Identify the elements of a sentence. We will understand and use quotation marks. We will also learn about question marks.

  • Read and write contractions.

  • Read a story titled In a Dark, Dark, Wood. While reading, we will notice a pattern in text and make predictions about what is going to happen next. 

  • Read a poem titled Pumpkin Orange.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Complete an opinion project based on the story “The Day the Crayons Quit”

  • The students will first complete a planning sheet working on the opinion process, then write about their favorite color and reasons why it is their favorite. 

This week in math, we will….

  • Take our Unit 2 test

  • Make A Creepy Carrot Quilt Square to help us count by 5’s

  • Solve for the unknown in an addition equation involving 3 whole numbers

  • Create a composite shape by composing two-dimensional shapes

  • Partition a rectangle into 2 and 4 equal parts and use the terms halves, half of, fourths, quarters, fourth of, and quarter to talk about the 2 or 4 equal parts

  • Play “I Have I Need”

This week in science we will….

  • Complete our unit on Pushes & Pulls

  • Complete a Spooky Ghost STEAM activity with the book “Ten Timid Ghosts”

  • October 27th - Halloween Parade please have your student bring their costume to school. Do not wear it to school. Please make sure it is appropriate for school. Thank you!

October 16th, 2023


Wear green/nature clothing on Monday for our rescheduled stewardship day! Also wear long pants and socks! 

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Blend sounds to produce words with s-blends.

  • Spell words with s-blends

  • Read irregularly spelled words (call, from, which, very).

  • Read and write words with final blends.

  • Read a Poem titled, Five Little Leaves. We will identify rhyming words in the poem, locate high frequency words we know and notice -ing endings in words. 

  • Read The Big, Green, Scary Monster by Judith Nayer.  While reading, we will infer the feelings of characters and make connections between text and illustrations. We will also make predictions about what might happen next. 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Complete an opinion project based on the story I Wanna Iguana by Karen Kaufman Orloff

  • The students will first complete a planning sheet working on the opinion process, then write about if they think the main character should get an iguana for a pet or not.  They will get to do a fun art project too!  

This week in math, we will….

  • Play domino flash to help us with our subitizing and math facts

  • Learn different strategies for addition such as doubles plus one, doubles minus one, ten and some more, etc.

  • Practice our doubles facts

  • Learn and play our new workplace “Spin and Add”

This week in science we will….

  • Continue our unit on Pushes & Pulls

  • Complete experiments in order to see how force and motion work in real life

 This week in Literacy, we will...

  • Blend sounds to produce words with l-blends.
  • Read irregularly spelled words (many, thing, you, these).
  • Identify the elements of a sentence.
  • Identify and understand the use of possessives. 
  • Read a book titled, Jumping Into Fall Leaves, by Winnie Tucker. While reading, we will discuss when characters change or learn a lesson and use illustrations to support comprehension.
  • Write a response to reading.
  • Read a poem titled, The Big Black Bug. We will highlight words that have l-blends.
  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in Writing, we will...

  • Study narrative books written by published authors. We will identify what craft moves these authors use that we can include in our own writing.

  • Continue to use strategies to bring our stories to life!

  • Notice words in our writing that are really important and make them "Pop Out Words".

This week in Math, we will...

  • Recognize the number of objects in a collection.

  • Count up to 20 objects to answer "how many?".

  • Solve addition problems by counting on from the larger number (6+4 students would say “6” then say “7,8,9,10” the answer is 10).

  • Add within 20.

  • Use double flap cards to learn and practice fact families. 

  • Learn and play a new Workplace called Sort the Sum.

This week in Science, we will...

  • Start a new unit on Pushes and Pulls.

  • Learn about force and motion.

  • Explore how we use pushes and pulls in our everyday lives.
