December 19th Newsletter

 



December 19-21st , 2022


This week in literacy, we will…

  • Review the sound-spelling of single letter long vowels (e,i,o)

  • Read a story titled, The New School. We will use context to confirm word meanings and build fluency. We will also discuss the events of the story and find details in the text or illustrations to support our thinking. 

  • Read Santa Clause and the Three Bears by Maria Modugno and identify the characters and the setting in the story.

  • Read The Polar Express, by Chris Van Allsburg.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Write a Christmas Roll-a-Story. The students will roll a dice to mix-and-match story elements to produce a creative writing piece.

This week in math, we will….

  • Learn about place value and make a place value holiday tree

  • Practice our math facts with holiday themed coloring sheets

This week in science, we will…

  • Use the engineering process to design and build a Christmas tree using solo cups.

December 12-16, 2022


This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish long e, i, and o vowel sounds.

  • Spell words with the long e, i, and o (no, hi, she, go, me).

  • Read irregularly spelled words (why, new, school, friend).

  • Identify the elements of a sentence and review the use of quotation marks.

  • Read and write words with common prefixes (re and un).

  • Read a version of The Three Billy Goats Gruff during shared reading. While reading, we will recognize and use simple contractions and understand the meaning of new content words supported by words and pictures. We will also retell major events of the story and identify the characters and the setting. 

  • Read a poem titled Peppermint Stick. We will identify rhyming words in the poem.

  • Write a response to reading.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Have some fun by exploring a variety of writing genres.

  • Learn about acrostic poems. We will write acrostic poems about winter and snowmen.

  • Focus on writing conventions by reading and fixing sentences that are grammatically incorrect.

  • Write a fictional story about a melted snowman.

This week in math, we will….

  • Recognize and extend number patterns

  • Count to 120, starting with any number less that 120, including 0 or 1

  • Read numerals to 120

  • Work on solving different types of story problems such as how many more, how many less, how many total, etc. 

  • Learn different ways to solve word problems 

This week in science, we will…

  • Start a Rokenbok engineering unit.

  • Manipulate ROK Blocks to build structures (bridges, trucks, and castles).

  • Explore a specific problem engineers often face (how to make things stronger).

  • Understand that pushes on objects can have different strengths and that bigger pushes cause bigger changes in the object.

  • Test constructions for strength; Try to improve strength by using different designs.

December 5th Newsletter

 



December 5th-9th, 2022

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Know sound-spellings of final e words with o_e and u_e and e_e patterns.

  • Read irregularly spelled words (use, put, don't, other).

  • Distinguish long from short vowels.

  • Identify elements of a sentence (understand the use of an exclamation point, recognize a colon).

  • Read and write words ending with the inflectional endings -ing and -ed.

  • Acquire new vocabulary, hear and clap words with three or more syllables, and recognize ending punctuation marks during shared reading. We will also infer the main theme and tell facts we learned from reading. 

  • Read a poem titled Mouse in a Hole. We will read the poem with expression and highlight words with the o_e spelling pattern. 

  • Write a response to reading.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Write letters to Santa

  • Write a how-to on wrapping presents and create a craft along with it!


This week in math, we will….

  • Use a number line to solve addition and subtraction equations

  • Count to 120, starting with any number less than 120, including 0 or 1

  • Work with and learn about a number line

  • Count forward and backwards on the numberline by 1s, 10s, 5s, and 2s

This week in social studies, we will…

  • Finish our Neighborhoods unit

  • Learn about workers in our community

  • Learn about rural, suburban, and urban 

  • Read The Important Book by Margaret Wise Brown and write about why Cedarburg is special and important to us

  • Dec. 6- Holiday Concert at 6:00 (students should arrive at 5:45)

  • Nov. 29-Dec. 8- Kapco Toy Drive

  • Dec. 6- Buy an ornament to hang on our bulletin board ($1 donation to Kapco Toy Drive)

  • Dec. 9- No School (Professional Development Day)

  • Dec. 22-30- Winter Break
