November 27th, 2023


This week in literacy, we will…

  • Read and spell words with the final e (a_e and i_e patterns). 

  • Read irregularly spelled words (water, that, of, carry).

  • Read and write words containing soft c and soft g. 

  • Read a poem titled, Wise Old Owl. We discuss the meaning of the poem and highlight words with the long i sound.

  • Read a book titled,  The Big Surprise. While reading, we will infer the feelings of characters and retell major events in the story. 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons. 

This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue working on our opinion quitting 

  • Use sparkly words to help add to our writing 

  • Write letters to Santa and hope for a response from the elves!


This week in math, we will….

  • Continue to work on telling time 

  • Work on identifying fractions 1 whole, ½ , and quarters

  • We will learn equivalent equations for example 3+3=6 and 4+2=6

  • We will continue to work on comparing problems and word problems

This week in social studies we will….

  • Continue learning about being a good citizen

  • Learn about ways we can help others and show respect

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Read and discuss an article titled, All About Autumn. We will use evidence from the text to answer questions.

  • Review irregularly spelled words by playing "I Spy" on our Word Wall.

  • Read How to Catch a Turkey, by Adam Wallace and Turkey Trouble by Wendi J. Silvano.

  • Review sound-spellings for the consonant digraph sh, th, wh, ch, nk and ng.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Work on letter formation in our Handwriting Without Tears workbooks

  • Write a how-to piece about cooking a turkey


This week in math, we will….

  • Play some new Thanksgiving math games

  • Practice our teen number equations. 10+3 = 13, etc.

  • Learn and play “50 or Bust”

This week in social studies we will….

  • Continue learning about being a good citizen

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Know the sound-spelling for the digraphs ng and nk.

  • Read irregularly spelled words (who, know, was, made).

  • Read and write words with 3-letter blends (scr, spl, str, and spr).

  • Review proper sentence construction.

  • Read a book titled, Scram, by Julie Reich. While reading, we will make predictions based on repeating episodes in the story, infer characters' feelings from dialogue, text, and pictures, and reflect punctuation marks with our voice. 

  • Read a poem titled Autumn Leaves. While reading, we will notice descriptive words that appeal to our senses and highlight words with -ing inflectional endings. 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.


This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue writing opinion pieces and including multiple reasons as to why our opinion is what it is

  • Edit our writing - thinking about spaces between words, spelling, using the word wall and ending our sentences with punctuation.


This week in math, we will….

  • Solve story problems to 20

  • Apply the commutative property of addition to add

  • Solve for the unknown in an addition equation involving 3 whole numbers

  • Add with sums to 100

  • Determine what number is hidden on our number racks based off of the beads we can see

This week in social studies we will….

  • Continue our unit on “Being a Good Citizen”

  • Learn about how citizens should treat each other

  • Learn about voting and why we vote

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Learn the sound-selling for the digraphs ch, tch, and wh

  • Read irregularly spelled words (they, eat, too, our).

  • Identify the elements of a sentence. We will discuss the use of an exclamation point.

  • Read and write words with the inflectional ending -ing.

  • Read a poem titled, The Squirrel. We will locate words with consonant digraphs (wh, and sh), listen for descriptive words and identify words that rhyme in the poem. 

  • Read Oh, Good, by Judith E. Nayer for shared reading. We will notice word endings with the inflectional ending -ed. We will also infer feelings of the characters and retell major events from the story. 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Start a new unit on opinion writing.

  • Watch a dog show and judge the dogs according to which one is our favorite and give reasons why

  • Work on writing our opinions, giving a couple reasons why it is our opinion and including details with our reasons

This week in math, we will….

  • Practice learning my even and odd numbers

  • Practice my doubles fact

  • Learn our doubles plus and doubles minus facts 

  • Practice word problems

This week in social studies we will….

  • Continue our unit on “Being a Good Citizen”

  • Learn how we can get along with each other

  • Learn about how citizens should treat each other
