February 26th Newsletter

 

February 26th , 2024


This week in literacy, we will…

  • Know the sound-spellings of words with the r-controlled vowel sound /or/ (or, ore, oar).

  • Read irregularly spelled words (open, walk, every, buy).

  • Categorize words.

  • Read and write words with prefixes (pre and dis).

  • Build fluency by reading a story titled, Stores at the Mall. While reading, we will use context to confirm word meanings. We will also answer questions about the story, finding details in the text or illustrations to support our answers.

  • Read a poem titled, Horsie, Horsie. When reading, we will identify words with r-controlled vowels and review contractions.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.


This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue working on our non-fiction writing

  • Learn about how non-fiction writing sound different from a story and includes a lot of true facts

  • Work on including specific and important vocabulary words in our writing


This week in math, we will….

  • Practice our fact families with double flap cards

  • Play “ I have I  need”

  • Solve addition story problems with sums and minuends to 20

  • Apply the commutative property of addition to add

  • Solve subtraction problems by finding an unknown addend

  • Use the relationship between addition and subtraction to add and subtract within 20

  • Solve for the unknown in an addition or subtraction equation involving 3 whole numbers

  • Practice our double and half facts


This week in social studies we will….

  • Learn about the many cultures that shaped America

  • Learn about different customs and traditions

    • February 28- There Is No Friend As Loyal As A Book- Wear clothes to match a friend

    • February 29- Cooking Up Some Good Books - We will have a class treat provided to our class -

      please do not send in a treat with your child
    • March 1- Readers Are Leaders- Dress as what you want to be when you grow up

  • March 16- Winter Carnival

  • March 25-April 1- Spring Break

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Know sound-spelling of words with the r-controlled vowel sound /ur/.

  • Read irregularly spelled words (your, because, always, want).

  • Identify the elements of a sentence. 

  • Review the use of quotation marks and capital letters for proper nouns. 

  • Read The Giraffe, by Cordelia S. Finn. We will infer the author's purpose for writing this nonfiction book, and make connections among texts by noting similarities. 

  • Read a poem titled, Little Bird. When reading the poem, we will identify words with r-controlled vowel sounds. We will also identify the function of quotation marks, and brainstorm synonyms for the word "cried".

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Begin a new unit on Informative Writing

  • Learn and understand the features of the nonfiction genre

  • Make a list of topics we know a lot about (animals, weather, seasons, habitats, important places/people, machines or things that we use every day)

  • Begin planning and drafting a nonfiction informational book


This week in math, we will….

  • Start Unit 6 of math

  • Using penguins we will solve different types of word problems involving subtraction and addition 

  • Determine what information is important in word problems

This week in social studies we will….

  • Begin a new unit on Past and Present 

  • Explore what we can learn from life long ago

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish the r-controlled vowel sound /ar/.

  • Know the sound-spelling of words with the r-controlled vowel /ar/.

  • Read irregularly spelled words (work, again, eight, two).

  • Identify the elements of a sentence and review capitalization of proper nouns.

  • Read a poem titled, Hearts. We will identify color words, rhyming words, and r -controlled vowels in the poem.

  • Read a book titled Garden Helpers, by Charlotte Rose. While reading, we will notice words with consonant blends and compound words. We will also talk about important information in a nonfiction text.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue sharing our how-to presentations


This week in math, we will….

  • Create 3-D triangular prisms

  • Play shape riddles

  • Sort and Graph different 2D shapes based on attributes

This week in social studies we will….

  • Work on an American Symbol poster.  The students will chose an American symbol we’ve learned about and create a poster including what it represents and fun facts about it

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish long u and short u vowel sounds.

  • Know the vowel team sound spelling for the long u sound (ue, ew, and u_e).

  • Read irregularly spelled words (could, would, their, together).

  • Read and write compound words.

  • Read a poem titled, How Much Dew? We will locate words with long u sounds. 

  • Read a book titled, Bigger, and Bigger, and Bigger by Tess Fletcher. While reading, we will notice that in nonfiction text, information may be provided in different formats and places (captions, headings, sidebars, labels, etc.). 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.


This week in writing, we will…

  • Complete our How to Stories

  • Edit and Revise our How to stories

  • Begin sharing our “How to Projects” 


This week in math, we will….

  • Look for patterns with 2D shapes such as trapezoids, hexagons, triangles, etc..

  • Create 3D triangular prism in our new workplace

  • Sort and graph shapes based on their attributes

  • Be able to name non defining and defining attributes for shapes

This week in science we will….

  • Learn about the symbols that stand for our country and states.


  • Draw and write about their favorite symbol of our country
