January 2nd Newsletter

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish long e and short e vowel sounds.

  • Know the vowel team sound-spellings ee, ea, and silent e.

  • Read irregularly spelled words (find, around, under, wash).

  • Identify the elements of a sentence and review the use of different end marks. 

  • Read and form short e words with the spelling ea.

  • Read a poem titled, The Snowball.

  • Read a book titled, Lots of Snow by Joan Silver. We will use the events of the story to predict what will happen next. We will also discuss the problem in the story and share our opinions about how the characters might solve it. Additionally, we will recognize contractions and compound words in the text. 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Write about our winter break

  • Continue working on our handwriting journals

This week in math, we will….

  • Learn about Penguins and Antarctica 

  • Read and write numerals to 120

  • Compare pairs of 2-digit numbers

  • Measure different breeds of penguins and compare and contrast 

  • Add and subtract 10 from any given number, etc 37+10= 47

  • Organize, represent, and interpret data with up to three categories; ask and answer questions about the total number of data points, how many in each category, and how many more or less are in one category than in another

This week in social studies we will….

  • Finish our unit on Communities by creating a flip book describing where we live

  • Review our PBIS school wide expectations

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish long a and short a vowel sounds.

  • Know the vowel team for long a (ai, ay, and a_e).

  • Read irregularly spelled words (away, one, doesn't something).

  • Read compound words.

  • Review the use of different punctuation marks.

  • Read a poem titled, Peppermint Stick. We will identify rhyming words in the poem.

  • Read a book titled, The Big Mix-Up, by Nicole Walker. We will talk about the events of the story and infer the feelings of the characters. Additionally, we will make connections between personal experiences and the text. 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Finish our unit on opinion and book reviews

  • Work on our Handwriting Without Tears journals


This week in math, we will….

  • Represent addition and subtraction on a number line

  • Recognize and extend number patterns

  • Order numerals to 120

  • Demonstrate an understanding that multiples of 10 from 10 to 90 refer to some number of tens and 0 ones

  • Mentally find the number that is 10 more or 10 less than a given 2-digit number, without counting

  • Play “Frog Races” and “Hit the Pad”

This week in social studies we will….

  • Learn about our community in the world

  • Learn what continent, country, and state we live in

  • Compare and learn about rural, suburban and urban areas

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Learn about single letter long vowels made by e, i, and o as in go, we, or hi.

  • Read irregularly spelled words (new, why, school, friend).

  • Read and write words with common prefixes (re and un).

  • Read a poem titled, Jack-in-the-Box. We will locate single letter long vowel words in the poem. 

  • Read a story titled, A Pig Tale, by Lionel Page. While reading, we will infer the writer's purpose and message. We will notice words that add action or emotion to a text. 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons. 

This week in writing, we will…

  • Finish up our opinion writing unit

  • Work on writing catchy introductions and conclusions

  • Write book reviews about our favorite books!

This week in math, we will….

  • Recognize and extend number patterns

  • Count to 120, starting with any number less than 120, including 0 or 1

  • Read and write numerals to 120

  • Count by 5s and 10s to 100

  • Mentally find the number that is 10 more or 10 less than a given 2-digit number, without counting, and explain the reasoning used

  •  Add a multiple of 10 (up to 80) and another 2-digit number, using strategies based on place value, properties of operations, or the relationship between addition and subtraction

  • Subtract a 2-digit multiple of 10 from an equal or greater 2-digit multiple of 10, using drawings and strategies based on place value, properties of operations, or the relationship between addition and subtraction

This week in social studies we will….

  • Continue learning about maps and globes

  • Learn where our community is within the world

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Know the sound-spellings of final e words with o_e, u_e, and e_e patterns. 

  • Read irregularly spelled words (use, put, don't, other).

  • Distinguish long and short vowel sounds.

  • Identify the elements of a sentence, understand the use of an exclamation mark, and recognize a colon.

  • Read a poem titled, Mouse in a Hole. While reading, we will read with expression and locate words with long o vowel sounds.

  • Read a nonfiction book titled, Bone Riddles, by Ernesta Flores. While reading, we will acquire new vocabulary from listening and use in discussion. We will also tell facts about animals and how their skeletons help them move. 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue working on our opinion writing

  • Work on writing to persuade others

  • Compare our opinions to other similar opinions

This week in math, we will….

  • Start Unit 4 in Math

  • Learn how to use a number line

  • Represent addition on a number line

  • Recognize and extend number patterns on number lines

  • Learn how to use counting by 1s , counting by 2s, counting by 5s, and counting by 10s number lines

  • Play what's in the box

This week in social studies we will….

  • Start Unit 2 about our community 

  • Learn all about different kind of maps
