March 6th Newsletter

 

March 6th-10th, 2023

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish short oo (book) and long oo (moon) vowel sounds.

  • Read irregularly spelled words (about, write, word, done).

  • Identify the elements of a sentence and review the use of end punctuation marks. 

  • Read and write words with suffixes (-ly and -y).

  • Read a poem titled Moon, Moon. While reading, we will locate words with the long oo vowel sound and other long vowel teams we know.

  • Read a nonfiction narrative book titled, Boomer's Checkup during shared reading. While reading, we will infer an important idea and make personal connections to the text. We will also recognize plurals and contractions. 

  • Write a response to reading.

  • Sort words into categories based on their meaning to build an understanding of how words are related. 

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue working on our non-fiction books

  • Make sure we are slow checking our words so that our writing sounds right and makes sense

  • Include keywords that help our readers understand our topics

This week in math, we will….

  • Apply the commutative property of addition to add

  • Solve subtraction problems by finding an unknown addend

  • Use the relationship between addition and subtraction to add and subtract within 20

  • Use strategies to add and subtract within 20

  • Use these strategies to solve word problems

  • Use double flap cards to learn about fact families

This week in science, we will…

  • Continue learning about Arctic animals and how they adapt to their environment

  • Complete a blubber experiment
