February 21st, 2022

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Learn the letter-sound correspondences for oo, ue and ew, where the two letters make the /oo/ sound, as in moon, due and few

  • Learn the letter-sound correspondences for the vowel combination au and aw, where the two letters make the sounds we hear in law and haul

  • Read a book titled The Frog Who Couldn’t Jump by Lionel Page. While reading, we will summarize the problem of the story and infer the main character’s traits from story events. We will also understand the meaning of past tense verbs with -ed endings and review contractions.

  • Read a poem titled “Moon, Moon”

  • Write a “How-To” writing piece as a class

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons

In Writing this week, we will… 

  • Begin our How-To Unit

  • Understand what procedural nonfiction is

  • Brainstorm topics for our How-To books

  • Add lists for the supplies/materials readers will need in our How-To texts

  • Add commas at appropriate times


In math this week, we will… 

  • Partition a rectangle into halves and fourths

  • Partition a circle into halves and fourths

  • Describe halves and fourths and which you would rather have

  • Play fraction bingo with different shapes 

  • Take the Unit 5 Assessment


This week during our Science we will be starting a new unit on polar animals.  We will…

  • Learn about hibernation, migration, and animal adaptations

  • Learn about polar bears
