May 16th Newsletter

  This week in literacy, we will... 

  • Learn that the vowel combination ue and ew make the /oo/ sound, as in true and crew
  • Learn that homophones are words that sound the same but have different meanings and spellings
  • Read a book titled, The Cactus Hotel, by Abbey Grace Moore. We will read words with consonant clusters and understand new vocabulary from context. We will also identify the author's purpose for writing the book.
  • Respond to reading in our Reader's Notebooks
  • Read a poem titled, How Much Dew? We will highlight the words with the ew spelling pattern in the poem and identify the homophones "do" and "dew".
  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons

This week in writing, we will... 

  • Continue our Narrative Writing Unit

  • Focus on creating and including small, realistic details

  • Edit our work to include important components of realistic fiction

  • Revise our writing to make it easy to read

  • Prepare our series for publication

This week in math, we will... 

  • Tell time to the hour and half-hour on an analog clock

  • Understand how long a second, minute, and hour are

  • Compare a second, minute, and hour

  • Learn how to play a game called "Hour or Bust"

This week in social studies, we will... 

  • Learn about sugar and how much sugar is in different foods and drinks

  • Create a healthy recipe and make a class recipe book

  • Make observations about our first grade raised garden and take a look at all of the healthy foods that are beginning to grow!
