May 9th, 2022


This week in literacy, we will…

  • Read a book titled The Strawberry Hunt, by Joan Silver. We will discuss the story's setting and why it's important, talk about how illustrations and print features help us understand information, and make personal connections to the events in the story.

  • Respond to The Strawberry Hunt by writing about the problem and solution in the story

  • Read and sequence sentences to develop the concept of first, next and last

  • Learn that when a one-syllable word ends in f, l, s or z, the final consonant is usually doubled. These words have short vowel sounds

  • Read a poem titled I Know Something. We will highlight words in the poem that follow the FLSZ spelling rule

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons

In Writing this week, we will… 

  • Continue our Narrative Writing Unit

  • Edit our work to include important components 

  • Investigate what makes Realistic Fiction realistic

  • Focus on creating and including small realistic details

  • Create an Elephant & Piggie comic strip for E Day in the ABC countdown


In math this week, we will… 

  • Read and write numerals to 120

  • Count by 10s to 100

  • Demonstrate an understanding that the digits in a 2-digit number represent amounts of tens and ones

  • Use>, <, and = symbols to record comparisons of two 2-digit numbers

  • Add a 1-digit number and a 2-digit number

  • Determine the value of a collection of coins totaling less that $1.00

  • Reason abstractly and quantitatively 

  • Mentally find the number that is 10 more than a given 2-digit number, without counting

  • Determine the value of a collection of coins totaling less than $1.00 



In Science this week, we will continue our unit on Nutrition.  We will…

  • Learn about healthy foods, snacking and why it’s important to eat nutritious foods

  • Learn about foods that have vitamins and minerals in them
