December 12th Newsletter

 



December 12-16, 2022


This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish long e, i, and o vowel sounds.

  • Spell words with the long e, i, and o (no, hi, she, go, me).

  • Read irregularly spelled words (why, new, school, friend).

  • Identify the elements of a sentence and review the use of quotation marks.

  • Read and write words with common prefixes (re and un).

  • Read a version of The Three Billy Goats Gruff during shared reading. While reading, we will recognize and use simple contractions and understand the meaning of new content words supported by words and pictures. We will also retell major events of the story and identify the characters and the setting. 

  • Read a poem titled Peppermint Stick. We will identify rhyming words in the poem.

  • Write a response to reading.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Have some fun by exploring a variety of writing genres.

  • Learn about acrostic poems. We will write acrostic poems about winter and snowmen.

  • Focus on writing conventions by reading and fixing sentences that are grammatically incorrect.

  • Write a fictional story about a melted snowman.

This week in math, we will….

  • Recognize and extend number patterns

  • Count to 120, starting with any number less that 120, including 0 or 1

  • Read numerals to 120

  • Work on solving different types of story problems such as how many more, how many less, how many total, etc. 

  • Learn different ways to solve word problems 

This week in science, we will…

  • Start a Rokenbok engineering unit.

  • Manipulate ROK Blocks to build structures (bridges, trucks, and castles).

  • Explore a specific problem engineers often face (how to make things stronger).

  • Understand that pushes on objects can have different strengths and that bigger pushes cause bigger changes in the object.

  • Test constructions for strength; Try to improve strength by using different designs.

    • December 19 - Cozy Clothes (flannels, scarves, socks)

    • December 20 - Holiday Colors (red, green, white and/or blue)

    • December 21 - Ugly Sweaters / Tacky Outfits

  • Dec. 22-30- Winter Break

  • Jan. 2- School Resumes - Pajama Day!
