April 3rd Newsletter

 

April 3rd-7th, 2023

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Know sound-spellings for au, aw, alk, alt, and all.

  • Read irregularly spelled words (been, before, pretty, warm).

  • Add syllables to make new words.

  • Read and write words with the inflectional endings, s, ing, and ed.

  • Add the prefixes pre-, un- and re- to words. 

  • Read a poem titled, A Caterpillar Crawled. While reading, we will identify words with the aw vowel team. We will also locate quotation marks and make our voices reflect dialogue.

  • Read Scrunch the Caterpillar, by Jennifer Morris. While reading, we will read words with inflectional endings and notice that -ed can represent different sounds (/t/- wrapped and /d/- bragged). We will also discuss how the characters change in the story and identify the lesson they learn.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Write all about our spring break 

  • Begin a new unit on realistic fiction

  • Think of real people, places, and problems for our realistic fiction stories

This week in math, we will….

  • Recognize, describe, and extend number patterns

  • Count by 2s to 20 and beyond

  • Group and count objects by 2s

  • Look for and make use of structure

  • Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

  • Compare heights of different types of penguins

  • Create a penguin pair graph as a class

This week in social studies, we will…

  • Continue working together with our classmates to locate different states in the United States

  • Begin learning about important U.S. symbols including the American Flag, The White House and the Liberty Bell
