May 15th Newsletter

 

May 15-19, 2023



This week in literacy, we will…

  • Learn that some words have a double consonant at the end (-ell, -ill, -ess, -uss).

  • Read a book titled Oh, Good! by Judith E. Nayer. While reading, we will understand the meaning of words based on context and notice words with similar features (fell/full). After reading, we will infer the feelings of the main character and retell major events from the story. 

  • Read irregularly spelled words (want, there, could, would)

  • Read a poem titled, I Know Something. We will highlight words with the -ell spelling pattern in the poem.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons. 

This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue learning about different kinds of poetry

  • Write lyrical poems

  • Write acrostic poems

This week in math, we will….

  • Solve addition story problems with sums to 20 involving situations of adding to and putting together, with unknowns in all positions

  • Find number patterns using the change box game

  • Use strategies to add with sums to 20

  • Recognize, describe, and extend number patterns 

  • -Add with sums to 100

  •  Partition a rectangle into 2 equal parts

  • Use the terms halves and half of to talk about the 2 equal parts into which a rectangle has been partitioned


This week in science we will….

  • Continue our nutrition unit

  • Learn more about healthy snacks and foods

  • Plant cucumbers seeds so we can watch them grow.  We will get to transfer them into the plant boxes in the front of school soon!

  • May 15 - Hat Day - wear a hat to school!

  • May 16 - Interesting Fact Day - Bring an interesting fact to school to share with your classmates!

May 16 - Field Trip to Riveredge - Dress for the weather!
