January 23-27, 2023

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish long o and short o vowel sounds.

  • Blend sounds to produce words.

  • Know sound-spellings for the vowel teams oa and ow.

  • Read irregularly spelled words (part, people, more, or).

  • Identify the elements of a sentence and understand the use of a comma.

  • Read and write words ending with suffixes -ful and -less.

  • Understand the meaning of new words that are supported by text and pictures during shared reading. We will also retell important events from the story and infer the lesson we can learn from the story. Finally, we will find words with -ed ending and practice using commas to determine how dialogue is read. 

  • Read a poem titled, Snow, Snow, Fly Away. We will highlight vowel teams in the poem.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Begin a new unit on How To writing

  • Brainstorm topics for how-to books, thinking about things we are really good at that we could teach others

  • Begin writing a how-to book by listing all of the materials we need and breaking down the writing step by step

This week in math, we will….

  • Start Unit 5 all about shapes! 

  • Organize data with up to 3 categories

  •  Identify, name, describe, compare two-dimensional shapes including triangles, rectangles, hexagons, and trapezoids

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between the defining and non-defining attributes of a two-dimensional shape

  • Draw a two-dimensional shape with specific defining attributes

This week in social studies, we will…

  • Begin a new unit on Our Country

  • Learn about the continents and oceans, then zoom in on North America

  • Learn about the American Flag and our first president, George Washington
