January 30th Newsletter

 

January 30th - Feb. 3rd, 2023

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish long i and short i vowel sounds.

  • Know vowel team sound-spellings for y and igh.

  • Read irregularly spelled words (different, full, into, through)

  • Identify the elements of a sentence and review proper sentence construction.

  • Read and write words using comparatives and superlatives (-er and -est).

  • Read a poem titled, Star Light, Sar Bright. We will locate words with the -igh vowel team and identify rhyming words. 

  • Read a nonfiction book and infer an important idea during shared reading. We will also make connections between text and labeled photos. 

  • Write a response to reading.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness Lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Continue our How To writing

  • Learn about commas and how we use them to separate items in a list

  • Make sure we include very detailed steps in our how-to writing

  • Begin turning our how-to steps into a book

  • Learn about and make sure we are including transition words in our pieces

  • Please make sure to talk to your child about what they plan to do for their how-to at home presentation and make sure to return the slip by February 1st!

This week in math, we will….

  • There's a shape in my pocket.

  • Learn about how you can combine shapes to create new shapes. For example two triangles create a rhombus. 

  • Identify, name, describe, compare two-dimensional shapes including triangles, rhombuses, hexagons, and trapezoids.

  • Demonstrate an understanding of the difference between the defining and non-defining attributes in shapes. Non-defining attributes include size and color. Defining attributes include vertices (corners), number of sides, parallel or perpendicular lines. 

  • Draw a two-dimensional shape with specific defining attributes.

  • Create a composite shape by composing two-dimensional shapes (rectangles, trapezoids, triangles, hexagons).

This week in social studies, we will…

  • Continue learning about Our Country

  • Learn more about the 50 states that make up our country and where Wisconsin is located on the map

  • Learn about the American flag and the Pledge of Allegiance

  • Feb. 9th - 100th Day of School

  • Feb. 10th - No School Professional Development

  • Feb. 13th - Start our How-To presentations

  • Feb. 14th - Valentines Day Celebration
