January 2-6, 2022

This week in literacy, we will…

  • Distinguish long a and short a vowel sounds.

  • Decode one-syllable words with vowel teams ai and ay.

  • Read irregularly spelled words (away, one, doesn't, something).

  • Identify elements of a sentence.

  • Read compound words.

  • Read a story about snow during shared reading. While reading, we will use the events of the story to predict what will happen next and discuss how characters might solve the problem. We will also read contractions and take apart compound words to read two smaller words.

  • Write a response to reading.

  • Read a poem titled The Snowman. We will infer what the poem is about and highlight words with the ay vowel team.

  • Participate in Heggerty Phonemic Awareness lessons.

This week in writing, we will…

  • Write about our winter break

  • Learn about adjectives and use them to describe our favorite snowy day activity

  • Think about the steps we take to build a snowman and write about it, then we will either go outside or use Play-Doh to build a snowman following the how-to steps we came up with

  •  Subtract a 2-digit multiple of 10 from an equal or greater 2-digit multiple of 10
